Dean goods - ready for primer

buffalo

Now that all the Buffalo and 48XX pages have been brought over from the old RMweb, it is time to introduce something else that has been on my workbench for a while. This is a Martin Finney Dean Goods kit with matching 2500 gallon tender. This was my first brass kit, started early this year before the Buffalo arrived. At that point, the major brass components had been assembled into a reasonable likeness of one from the early, narrow footplate, lots with an S4 boiler around 1900-1905. As this will eventually have a similar livery to the Buffalo, I thought I would get both to the same state so that they can be painted together. So, after adding various white metal parts and making more lamp sockets, this is how she looks:

A little more tidying to do, then I'll need to clean up the tender. With luck, I'll get a coat of primer on this weekend.

Looks very good Nick, what a pair that and the Buffalo will make!

Thanks, Mikkel. I noticed that you have an Armstrong goods, another of my favourites.

Btw, I like your idea of illustrating the index with a different photo for each project!

Can you see the images? I can't...

I have just bought a Martin Finney kit for the Dean Goods. What motor/gearbox combination are you using?

Richard, I have a High Level 'LoadHauler Compact +' gearbox with D2 'DriveStretcher' and a Mashima 1020 motor. This fits quite well as only the DriveStretcher part has to fit between the compensation beams. It is, however, necessary to widen the cutouts in the cab front and the footplate slightly. Now that the Buffalo chassis is running, I intend to get back to the Dean chassis soon and, hopefully, will manage to post a few more photos here.

I asked Martin what he recommended as the Portescap is not made any more and he suggested Road Runner, Drive Stretcher D1 and Mashima 1220. I spoke to High Level and he thought I should use the RoadRunner Compact+. So I have 3 choices!!!

A further thought - I am building to 00. Is yours EM or P4. I notice the Load Hauler Compact+ is wider than the Road Runner, so I don't think the Load Hauler will fit in 00 frames. I think I might do some construction before deciding which one to use.

Interesting range of options...

I printed the High Level gearbox planner on an acetate sheet and used this to overlay a scaled drawing in order to work out which to use. Certainly, Martin's suggestion would work (he should know, after all), but I'm not so sure about the RoadRunner Compact+. Maybe it would fit but, at the moment, I can't see how without fouling either the cab backplate or the compensation pivot.

Mine is EM, so I have a little more room. However, it is only the drive stretcher that sits between the compensation beams, with the wider part of the gearbox above them. Even so, it might still be a bit tight for 00 frames.

I hope you'll be showing us your build here on RMweb. Mine was almost at the stage shown here when I started posting and I don't have any photographic record.
