Kyle's new clothes...

Posted by bcnPete , 09 October 2011 · 990 views

Update - This week I hope to complete the rewiring...which for me means using more than 2 different coloured wires

I'm not kidding...most of this layout was wired with what I had available at the time...which was only red and green...I even had to find a few old photos on myiPhone taken when last set up to remember how to re connect the wires :banghead: ...pathetic on such a simple layout too.

This weekend I have formed the new fascias in 2mm grey card from the artists shop. I know its not as strong as ply etc but my workshop is our glass dining room table so with a little TLC and careful manoeuvres through our apartment, they seem to work ok and are lightweight but stiff enough too (I doubled them on CJ-M for strength)

I have cut them to the shape as per the last sketch and they will be painted dark grey at a later stage. The front has been increased very slightly to allow me to redo the water (instead of resin I am thinking of trying the PVA layers method) I have also painted the base for the sky on the backscene using the same Wilko matchpot I used for the diorama...its called 'cloudless'...which I guess it is. I haven't decided how I am going to do the mountains behind...infact if I do them at all.

I have also increased the height of the backscene from 150mm to 200mm as I think that will allow a few better low level shots after.

Inspiration is coming in the form of Gary's excellent EM Glenuig layout on here...which I could stand and watch all day...and hope to try and time a UK visit to see it next year.

I think the 'new clothes' have tidied up the layout and give it more of a presence...I took a few shots and although a little OOF I quite like the 'looking up from the water' images...excuse the crude bits which I am hoping to address very soon...

Front view....excuse the terrace...haven't found out how to crop strange shapes yet...

Rear view...that edge will be refaced and masking tape removed...500mm cassettes fit nice and snug...

Dapol 26 really is a nice model...needs to be detailed and made grubby now...

From below...Quayside will be revisited...

And again...

Looking good Pete. I do love the attention you pay to presentation outwith the modelled scene - it gives a touch of class.

When you're thinking of the backscene mountains, go and have another look at Glenuig. I was very taken by Gary's subtle depiction of distant ranges when I saw the layout.
Many thanks Jamie - it might be my day job kicking in but when I look at layouts I do like to see the complete package as my pet hate is to see an excellent layout with a cloth pegged along the bottom like an old washing line!

Thanks for the backscene tip off...infact Gary kindly took a few moody shots of Kyle on my behalf the other week whilst he was there which he said he will send me.

For sure the simple pale sky at present is looking better then my previous hashed garish attempt ;)

Very nice, Pete.

Is there any scope to get a small curve in that corner of the backscene? It would be worth it if you could imho.

I think to convey the feeling of the area you need some mountains, but maybe just as pale silhouettes - as if it is a really drab day with limited visibility, to suggest they are there without them taking any focus.

I particularly like the view from a small boat too.
Ah much better than the emperors new clothes, I can see what should be seen!

Just keeps getting better! Have a look at Rosneath in my ramblings Pete I think that the guy who built that did a nice job. Also there are numerous apps on the iPhone now that do all sorts of tricks to make pics look a certain way including watercolour, oils pencil etc might be worth a punt?
Tom
A very tidy appearance Pete. I could do with some of your architectural design and card cutting skills... it all looks superb. Really looking forward to the re-development of this... with an eye on inspiration to be gleaned ;-)
Looking good. I think some representation of the mountains would worth while.

By the way congrats on the award at the agm.

Don
Pete, maybe a very basic question, but do you intend to operate from the back or the front (or maybe both) ?
Many thanks all for your kind comments - in more detail....

Thanks Tony...Yes it did cross my mind whilst doing it...and I will try a small radius without trying to compromise the road overbridge...the other end I decided to leave off completely as at least I can get some shots down the length afterwards.

Thanks also Rich - Agreed...something hinting at it...but not overpowering such as the last one...which was a rush job.

Thanks Kris - I did wonder whether anyone would take the bait from my title... ;)

Many thanks Tom - Any excuse for me to download more apps and play around with my phone...apparently, its the third person in my marriage I am told ;) BTW - I had another quick look back at Rosneath...as nice as the layout is, I think I will try and go for a more distant backscene than this one as the station and wall of Kyle need a little breathing space from the highlands.

Many thanks Jon - As one of the few peeps who saw it at its first and last exhibition, I hope I can transform it into something more enhanced. Card is my preferred material to work with and used with double sided tape it can be pretty robust.

Thanks Don - I will undertake some trials on it.
Thanks also for the message of congrats - I was completely surprised...but nevertheless very happy.

Andy, hi - Good question! The layout was always planned to be operated from the back as all the slide switches are there but instead of my 20 year + Gaugemaster handheld, I will rewire it to use my Morley Vesta N controller which will be mounted at the rear but comes with two 2.5 metre hand held walkabouts...so I can set some trains up at the back and then watch them arrive from the front.
