Progress - bits and pieces...

Posted by bcnPete , 15 October 2011 · 515 views

Update - This week has seen a number of things addressed.

Firstly, the rewire. More of a replacement of some of the major wires which used to join the various sections together have been redone and the DIN socket for the controller replaced with a terminal box so I can quickly connector the Morley controller. A couple of sparodic sections were traced back to dodgy mini slide switches so these will be replaced shortly.

Secondly I rebuilt one of the cassettes and redid the height alignment. I have opted to go for simple croc clips attached as and when necessary as I didn't want to get laid down with sliding brass tubes etc again. At least you physically have to take the clips on and off and reposition them so hopefully less chance of things moving when you don't want them too.

Thirdly, I have put a small curve (Thanks for the prompt Tony Simms) in the backscene by the bridge. I cut a slot and then scored the back of the card and did the same to both right angles before joining. Its had a first coat of paint and will require a little sanding and final coats but I do think it looks better for it.

Lastly, having had a few small enjoyable running testing sessions, I have also managed to get my RR 156 (to represent Kyle in later times) running. When Dapol first introduced the 156 I missed out on the RR version so my cunning plan was to buy a dummy version and the cheapest powered livery available with a view to body swapping...although I was put off it as I couldn't find a way to take it apart easily. Many thanks to Steven B who recently wrote some notes on how to do it on the Dapol 26 thread and this morning I followed them. Its certainly very fiddly and I couldn't manage to get the lights back in the driving end, but at least it works and it now needs a little extra detail and weathering.

A little tweaking of the turnouts is required where stock coughs slightly and next job is to redo the platforms and road and start the station building.

A few pics to describe the above...

The new backscene has been strengthened with the old and also keeps the spirit of its previous boxfile credentials...

The fiddleyard has been tidied, cassettes redone and simple crocs to power it...

Thanks to Tony Simms for suggesting the small curve...which I thinks looks better...

Trying to eventually capture that famous shot of Kyle looking down from the road bridge...

Looking back...rolling stock are placeholders...37 to be replaced with lowered 37175...vans to be replaced with Stephen Harris kits...

The RR 156...apart from coughing slightly on the turnout it runs pretty sweetly on the wheels it came with...they will be turned down soon...

This is looking good Pete - The small curve in the corner sure makes a difference; something I have just taken note of for my own purposes :)
I like the croc clips on the cassette. An idea I used for quite a while.

The simplest ideas are usually the best and most reliable.

The KISS approach! (KISS= Keep It Simple Stupid!)

Cheers!

Thanks Mickey - lt's small, but any more than that would have ridiculed the road bridge I think, so better than the 90º...

Thanks Frank - Yes, especially on this layout...
Good stuff as always, Pete. The colour markings for the wiring are particularly neat. I'm itching to recolour one of them while your back is turned :-)
Good work all round. Very neat as usual.

Thanks Mikkel - Don't be misled by those colours ;) The coloured dots have absolutely no relationship to the wires that feed them...so it might help it if you do that!

Thanks Don...
