we spray to grey...

Posted by bcnPete , 28 October 2011 · 876 views

Good evening,

Just a small update to end the week.

The next level of detail has been added to the station building. Slithers of evergreen strip have been used to create the verticals and framing to doors and windows.

Windows will be (I think) formed of individual 'cut to fit' clear perspex with a paper or thin plasticard frame mounted on top. I would like to have gone the etch route, but I have one eye on the clock as I would like to keep the project moving until christmas time and seeing as its almost November that equates to about 16 modelling slot evenings for me.

I then aim to get back on CJ-M in 2012, allowing this to fulfill its role as a mini operable layout with small detailed fleet of rolling stock...errr...most of which is still in flat pack etch format :biggrin_mini:

I have given the station building the requisite misting of grey primer to see how it fairs. The roof tiling will probably be strips of paper overlaid. I am now considering revisiting the colour scheme and perhaps will finish it in cream with all timber joinery picked out in green. The blue I think represents Kyle of later years, whereas I will sort of pitch mine early eighties, with the Kyle of Lochalsh blue sign...which I believe Michael Palin has hanging on his garden wall :good_mini:

I attach a few pics (terrible light as its been persisting it down here) of it having its grey mist coat and a little stock as garnish...where's Bryn's tasty grubby class 24 when you need it? :cray_mini2:

Have a good weekend all...

And a little more zoomed in...platform due to be resurfaced and will close the gap...

shades of my fair lady

aka the rain in Spain ..............
Looking even better Pete.., I always like the way some grey primer highlights the details so well.
Looks very impressive Pete, I might just have to give you the 24 on long term lone. Doubt I'll be getting many miles out of it for the foreseeable future.

Hi Pete,
I've got slides of it in July 1979 and the buildings are basically off-white for the upper area and a mid-grey below the window level (up to and including the 'waistband'). Unfortunately I don't have a slide scanner, otherwise I'd post them. The edge of the canopy (which is very obviously two planks) is also in the off-white (off-white as in a very, very pale grey rather than cream ormushroom). It doesn't look that heavily weathered in 1979 either.

By George, he's got it... ;)

Thanks Jon - agreed...it highlights both the good and the bad...

Thanks Bryn...now there's a thought*
*dispatches address in Spain in PM immediately*

Thanks Bernard...hmmm...that's got me thinking again...it looks like the constant here is the off white/cream to the upper planks so perhaps I will start with that and keep pondering what the joinery details will be.
Back to the man on the lonely platform again? Those windows are going to take some work, but a man that can cut all those corner stones for the 2011 challenge, should rise to it.
Don

Thanks Don...I had only just recovered from all those stones as well...
Just following up from Bernard's description I have found this (third photo in)

It's not far off Spanish grey car primer colour! ...but it looks a little monochrome....and perhaps a little dull?...

The weather looks much the same as it was in July! That odd looking 'hut' (I photographed that too!) I think may be off a ship.

That's why I got rid of the last backscene...the sky was was far too blue to be convincing...even though it was from a KoL photo!
update...just ordered Michael Palin's rail journeys from Play.com (bargain at €6.99 delivered)...probably take about a month to arrive with Spanish post but it might have a few relevant close ups I can refer to!

Aye, the ScR seemed to adopt the corporate image grey for building woodwork in the 70s-80s. Just seems to suck all the attractiveness out of many structures IMO - some managed to survive in the old colours, getting more and more faded and decrepit. Maybe that's an opt-out for you?

Jamie, hi - The cool grey and white is beginning to warm on me...if that makes sense.
I did manage to find a photo of MP's KoL sign lent against the station building yesterday which seems to show white for the upper timber, light grey for joinery to windows and door frames, mid grey at the base and a dark grey for the sill. Doors look to be dark blue. I would post the photo but can't find the link today :(
The opt-out is a good option but I think I will now start with the late 70's, early 80's dull grey as it's part of the moody quayside look I am trying to capture...
