Many thanks for all the continued comments regarding the layout, in particular the recent 'backscene crisis'. I decided to reprint option 1 as that seemed to get the most votes and I think the differences are quite subtle but worth it. Although I realise it may not be to everyone's taste, I am grateful to Mike to raise the issue, which prompted debate and actually got me to rethink it and change it albeit in a subtle way. Thanks Mike. I confess I was starting to lose a little interest again with the layout and the enthusiasm was starting to drop off, so I felt I had to take a decision and keep moving. I am also mindful that both Gary and Glen both gave their time freely on this element to help and that is not something you turn your back on. Many thanks again fellas' if you are reading this.

In terms of attaching it I used a mixture of spraymount and photomount...only a mixture because both were on their last legs and apart from a heart stopping moment where they both coughed and spat....we got through it. The wall and bridge have now been glued in position too.

So with that done, it was time to turn my attention back on the station building. I have acquired some of Ian's (scanman's) self adhesive slates for the roof so last night I have prepared the roof profile (the gaps will be adjusted once the glue has set) and I will now start the cladding on the walls using, I think prescribed thin card, painted before application. Then the door and window frames will be added separately, again pre-painted. A different approach this for me as I am quite an impatient modeller so I need to try and relax and let things dry before moving on.

I attach a couple more photos. I think the scale of the building seems okay relative to the size of the layout...and if I can manage some nice detail it may help lose that backscene to fulfil its roll as backdrop...

From the roadbridge end...am playing around with my camera settings still trying to improve shots...

Density looks spot on, Pete. You have reminded me of the highlands sufficient to have encouraged me to hit the workbench, and my slightly boz-eyed Class 24/1, today!

I think Steve Flint joked in the RM KoT article about putting some peat and seaweed under the layout for effect, but I can almost smell it just looking at that layout. Love it.

Many thanks Tom - Yes I read on the forum the other day of your passion for all things Scottish...be warned though...it gets expensive ;)

That's very nice. Looks bleak and a bit chilly too!

Many thanks Nth...its also started snowing today in Barcelona so it feels more so... :O

Hi Pete,

The back scene looks great! It really captures the Scottish Highlands well. I have been following your blogs on the station building and it really is coming along nicely!

Best regards,

Jeremy

I think the first and last picture you've posted really show how well it's blended in. Nowt wrong with the second photo - I think it'll look great once the building is sorted.. just that the other two show it all blending togther better. Well done. Progress, as you say!

Hi Pete

I think you have got that backscene spot on, and the model could not be based on anywhere else than Kyle. Overall, the models coming on a treat, and it is giving me some incentive to get my self into gear, and have a go at the 2 mill stuff.

Many thanks Jeremy - really needs a large logo Tractor now to set it off...

Jon, hi and many thanks too - yes....hmmm......the building...now I just need to finish that so I can work on some rolling stock.

Many thanks again Gary - Really appreciated...especially the time you put into this.

Glenuig inspired Kyle...so if this layout can return some inspiration...then that's a nice story...

That's a result! Nice one Pete.

Many thanks Tony...and a curved backscene as per your suggestion... :biggrin_mini:

Brilliant, the next diorama I do will take inspiration from the grey look of Kyle... Victoria Bridge has come over all summer-ish, bathed in unusual sunshine.

For all of its greyness, your realistic approach is oddly refreshing.

Now its "in position" it looks brilliant!

The third first picture is (probably) just like being there....... Probably only cos the nearest I've ever been so far is Edinburgh! and the third picture looks like a very well presented model :)

Me too - I have to walk quickly past the local stationers lest I succumb!!!

Looking really good Pete

Good choice :-)

The last photo really shows how well the curved backscene and the whole fascia (incl. lettering and that very cool grey colour) works.

What can I say other than: Neat, Pete!

Thanks Will...it marks a stark contrast for me then working on a layout in sunny Cornwall... :sungum:

Thanks also Mickey....I hope it now warrants 'backdrop' status...

Thanks also Ian - Can't wait to get stuck into the roofing now...

Thanks Mikkel - You have resurrected one of my old nicknames from work...it was...Neat Pete...or Pete the Neat...but as I get older, its not the case...

Hi Pete

May I second Mikkel's comment - very neat, Pete!

Love that station building. Interesting what you said about being an impatient modeler. I think were all a bit like that and want to get things done asap. It has slowly dawned on me over the last three years of coming back to the hobby that with a little more patience things seem to fall into place better - what's that old cliche again - more haste less speed.

However, still can't wait to see this completed!

Regards

Mike

I've only just found this entry (sorry about that)! I really like the look of the back scene - it just captures that atmosphere. Having spent much of my younger years driving upto Skye and waiting for for ferry first thing this screams Kyle - even without the station! But I have known it to be sunny on (very rare) occasions, and its simply beautiful.

The quayside/water looks much improved. All in all a very inspiring model.

I know what you mean about being an impatient modeller - I want all my layouts to look like Pendon, only yesterday, then I lose my patience with them when they don't. The difference is that yours are already over half way to looking that good.

Many thanks Tom - I do have a few blue sky photos of Kyle from the last backscene attempt...but it looked too 'club med' holiday brochure for me, so went for the grey and moody affect...overall, I am much happier with it.
