Completing and Taming the Lighting in Bachmann's S Stock

After several soldering sessions over some days, I have been adding lighting strips to each coach in turn of my Underground S Stock train from Bachmann and the LT Museum.

I have tried a few different resistances to lower the brightness, which mostly failed to dim them. I also tried a different lighting strip with a slightly warmer colour and lower light output in the third car, but that too wasn't satisfactory. The results are shown in the photos below, with the first showing the car with the warmer lighting (actually a composite shot put together from three photos with different focal points):

I had a bit of a session with the soldering iron again today, adding a 470k Ohm resistor to each of the S Stock cars in turn, plus wiring the final driving motor car for the lights. Car #3 has had its warm white lights replaced by cool white to match the remaining five cars.

The first photo in this second group shows two of the cars (nos 3 and 4 in the train) for comparison of the before and after; the one on the right has the extra resistor in the line.

The other two photos show the entire 6-car train with "tamed" lighting fitted. I am much happier with the result now.

This last photo in the dark shows that there is still a bit of light show-through in the car bodies, so a coat of paint along the insides may be in order for the future.

I suppose the next job will be to paint the seats, now that the interiors can be seen so clearly, and perhaps tidy up one or two stray wires.

That looks very convincing!

A few passengers slumped in the seats would really complete the appearance of a late night train running through the suburbs. (But I suppose they might be a bit of a problem in the carriage sidings during daylight hours.)

If you are running on dcc your lighting should be conntrolable via your chip if you are on dc, and this is only my opinion, you should be using 5 volt led strips WARM WHITE with a suitable electronic connection. I have done this on dc... it does need soldering.. I also have a couple of circuits... you can stop the train the lights dont go off!

Sorry d00m, I missed your comment until now.

I have wired these strips directly to the track pickups, so no intermediate decoders ... For an underground train I figured there was really no need to be able to switch the lights off. There's no reason why you could not add decoders, apart from expense - for this six car unit, there are already two decoders on board for the DM cars, so four extra decoders would be required.

For modern units with fluorescent lighting, the colours tend to be colder than older units with incandescent bulbs. Even so, many operators and builders have now realised the impersonal feel cold-coloured lighting and cold internal decors give, and are tending to warmer lighting and colours nowadays. With the cheap lighting strips I have used, it is a relatively easy job to swap them over and experiment with effects.

These cheap lighting strips come with the LEDs wired in sets of three with a built in resistor for each triplet. They still come out extremely bright on 12 volts.
