Shedwise, depot protection not active and lots of minor snags but 605 is the first receiving attention in the new A road (cylinder head crack). Photos on Flicker stream. New trackwork in yard almost all in place. First HSTGTi due mid Feb but most likely delayed and new sleeper buffet 10217 due end Feb. Only 2 SLEPs left in service in refurbished.

Hi,

Here's an Article from the Rail Engineer about Cornwalls Signalling:

https://www.railengineer.uk/2018/01/15/cornwalls-capacity-challenge/

Slightly annoying that it lists Amey & Atkins doing the Signalling Design, whilst they have done some of the detailed design, the scheme design (and the Roskear Panel Design) was done by the Reading Signalling Design Group.

Are they going to put in a magnet for the down stop Signal at Baldu?

Plenty of Colas Railfreight Class 70 activity this week in connection with line upgrades between truro and Penzance incl. 807/8/9/13 and 15.

There were a couple of 70's just outside of Penzance yesterday late morning. Very easy to see from the A30.

Hi

I was exhibiting my China Clay layout at the Helston show today when one of the viewers came out with a worrying comment......

He said that one of the rail bridges on the Fowey route had been declared not safe & as nobody would agree as to whose responsibility it was to repair it that all clay trains to Fowey had been stopped.....

Is this fact or misinformation.....I sincerely hope the latter......

Last November at another exhibition I was chatting to a member of staff in the operating dept of I assume Imerys who said there were going to be issues with the ageing fleet of CDA's soon & a decision was to be made about the means of transporting the clay to the docks at Fowey.....

He was definitely pro rail but it wasn't up to him sadly......

Hopefully Rail transport will continue but any info would be appreciated....

Cheers Bill

They were moving yesterday.  There are no trains of any sort moving through East Cornwall this weekend, specifically between Par and St. Budeaux, due to the commissioning of new signalling through that area and the installation of the new panel in Lostwithiel box.

I am not in a position to know whether or not there actually is a problem on the Fowey branch but it sounds like fake news.

With regards to the ageing CDAs, There is of course plenty of 10 or so year old Fastline Coal Hoppers in store. Of course any conversion of these would depend on the costs of converting them (probably similar to the GBRf Biomass hoppers), conversions of terminal ends and track friendly-ness of the hoppers.

I don't think they would fit the unloading equipment at Fowey, which I was told is the main issue as new 2 axle wagons seem not to be an option now.

Hi

As I understand it from the guy I was speaking to last November 4 wheel wagons are a no no for newbuild......

This is due to either rail or similar regulations that all new build must be bogie wagons......

He did say that the JIA's could be used except for as stated above the unloading facilities....

Specifically designed for the CDA's back in the day.....

As I see it.....

The problem is are there any HAA's around in good enough nick to be converted.....or similar wagons....& at what cost to who......

Or who pays for new wagons & a new unloading facility

Or do the Cornish minor roads get clogged with more Articulated lorries.....

The guy certainly reckoned that rail was a better option as 38 CDA's at a time could be unloaded a lot quicker & more efficiently than the equivalent delivered by lorry....

Hopefully the right decision is made for the future & not just short term economics take over.....

Cheers Bill
