rovex
You know how it is. You put the train down, get momentarily distracted and then for the life of you can't remember where you've left it. the only thing to do is to retrace your footsteps and reinvade Poland. Derekstuart
This will end up in the same category as"Crystal Palace vacuum train found decades later", says local 'expert'"The steam engine was bought by Mr [insert name here] and buried in the field alongside where his son was killed by it in 19XX- and we have found the remains of this steam engine""We have found the remains of the steam engine that derailed and sank into the marsh and has remained below the ground for the past X decades"and my favourite one for absurdity"The government buried dozens of steam engines in a secret cavern to be re-used later on if we ever run out of diesel."The first three do the rounds often, but the last one- oh dear.. some people really do subscribe to that. One member of the BRB in mid 80's was so interested that when he became a Director on BRB he ordered an enquiry to find out if there was any evidence to support the claim. Of course it's true and they are buried alongside the flying pigs that were stored in case British Airways needed them. The most obvious thing about this story is that the Russians didn't just suddenly pop up in May '45 and invade Poland. It was quite clear for some time that the Germans were going to lose Poland- (this is evidenced by them trying to hide the death camps that were largely in Poland) and if they had 300 tonnes of gold bullion in Poland (unlikely) they would have had it back to Germany or more likely Switzerland or Spain much, much earlier. A nonsense story I'm afraid.
RMweb Gold Joseph_Pestell Posted August 19, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 19, 2015 It's not called the silly season for nothing. I guess all the real journalists have gone on holiday.
Derekstuart
On that basis, we can assume that all REAL journalists have long since retired. Silly season now lasts 12 months per year (although I DID read in the daily mail (not my copy- I found it on a train) that there is a eu/USA/bilderberger plan to enforce a 13 month year on us)

RMweb Premium Claude_Dreyfus Posted August 19, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 19, 2015 Okay, so the gold is pretty interesting...but not half as interesting as the potential gold in the form of epoch two carriages/wagons!

Talltim
I suspect it's more common than you think, 40s model, pizza cutter wheels, buzzy motor, moulded on handrails, etc. Gets put at the bottom of the pile awaiting detailing and a new chassis, then Roco produce a new version with DCC operated guns

Please remember to do this first as this area was part of Germany, until the end of WW11 when this area was vested over to Poland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potsdam_Conference
Derekstuart
Thanks Mad Hatter. I am well aware of the border changes post 1945, as agreed at the Yalta conference previously. But I didn't see any need to complicate matters. The references to this alleged train is a little vague, so I wouldn't want to split hairs over it. My point is still valid, I believe, but I will re-word it thus. "The most obvious thing about this story is that the Russians didn't suddenly just pop up in May '45 and invade Poland and move towards German Silesia." The nazis were indeed moving anything of value Westwards and hiding their atrocities in the East, in fear of the repercussions from the USSR. The idea that 300 tonnes of gold would have been anywhere near the Eastern front is laughable.

RMweb Premium polybear Posted August 28, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 28, 2015 Something to bear in mind is the fact that some (many?) of those who hid the train may well have been executed immediately afterwards, such as the footplate crew, in order to keep the secret.... Mark Dickerson
Call me an enthusiast (in the believing sense), but train with gun turrets doesn't have to be a bullion/treasure train but could just be an armoured formation taken out of use like a lot of other equipment by a retreating army. Let's hope it's safe whatever it is...
dullsteamer
Okay, so the gold is pretty interesting...but not half as interesting as the potential gold in the form of epoch two carriages/wagons! After 70 years in a tunnel I reckon any locos or rolling stock would be in poor condition. I recall seeing some WW2 German equipment that was retrieved from an underground bunker in the Channel Islands after only 40 years - it was all as rotten as a chop. In any case I'm highly skeptical of this story. I don't know how many times I've heard stories of buried trains, tanks, aircraft, motorcycles, firearms, etc. None of them turn out to be true. Cheers, Mark.
