VTEC Class 43 No. 43238 ‘NRM40’

In celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the official opening of the National Railway Museum at York, Virgin Trains East Coast have named one of their crack HST units ‘NRM 40’.

The naming ceremony took place at York Station on the 23 September and was performed in front of an invited audience which included representatives from both the National Railway Museum and Virgin Trains East Coast.

The Class 43 unit chosen to carry the name and the celebratory livery was number 43238, which was built at Crewe in 1977 and had originally been numbered 43038 before being reclassified in 2007.

As part of the celebration it is intended that Locomotionmodels.com will be commissioning an HST train pack from Hornby that will include not only the ‘NRM 40’ driving car but the standard liveried Virgin Trains East Coast HST unit that accompanied 43238 on the day of the naming. At present Locomotionmodels.com are awaiting further information from Hornby with regards to availability etc.

For further information please subscribe to the Locomotionmodels.com Newsletter or telephone and register your interest.

I had a very friendly confirmation from Locomotion today to say I have been placed on the list, and they are 'quite' sure there shall be coaches.... I am thinking perhaps something like the Modelzone 'East Coast' LTD HST a few years back. Though one homes a VTEC set would be some what more successful than the heavily discounted East Coast (I guess going out of business did not help!)

Rather neat that it shall be with 43312 :)

A cracking livery to put onto a model, the last HST I shall buy before the new world arrives

I had rather got the impression that the Hornby HST has some weaknesses. Is this true and will they be fixed?

The old one perhaps but not the new one. If there was a weakness with the new one it was the light contacts, but this has been reworked and is now better than ever.

I think the issue is not with the power cars but with the rather dated Mk3 coaches. Are these still the ones inherited from Lima?

Nope....From what I heard only one is inherited from Lima. The others are just old Hornby tooling. Lima had some short Mk3s

Sure about that? Hornby produced short Mk. IIIs and Lima full-length. I believe Hornby started with the right number of windows but made them narrower to fit, then reduced the number of windows by one to make them the correct width. When Hornby took Lima over, the Lima full length Mk. IIIs replaced the old Hornby tooling.

Well I may be mixed up then...All I know is someone had them the wrong them.

Hornby used to make short versions but updated them before they bought the Lima tooling so most are their own newer full length models except the TGS which they never made so have used the Lima tooling as part of their current range. I don't think they're too bad and there have been various improvements to the glazing over time particularly. A recent issue with some has been the buffet coaches being tooled with the incorrect roof moulding of a standard coach without the vents etc.

Just something I noticed.

The load capacity of this Virgin Trains power car is shown as 0.8 tonnes.

However the recently relivered GWR set shows the load for the power car as 2.2 tonnes.

Is this because the Virgin one was from the earlier batch with rear driving cab, or do TOCs arrange their power cars different internally, hence differing capacities?

Just wondering.

Personally I'd settle for the Lima HST and Mk3s in Railroad range in VTEC colours , with Special editions using the main range one for those who want something special and are prepared to pay for it. Otherwise a whole train will be unaffordable.
