Best speakers for a Zimo class 33 and class 56?

Hi

I'm looking to improve what I'm hearing from my Zimo class 33 and class 56 chips both with digitrains recordings. I've got a 28mm speaker in the tank of the class 33 and I've fitted a bass enhanced to the class 56. It's fitted in the speaker recess. I'm not really impressed by either, and was wondering if anybody had better suggestions?

Thanks

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

You need to add more information,

For example are you talking 0 gauge, in which case you've no problems, due to the potential size of speakers available,...

But I suspect you are talking about 00 gauge, in which case you need to identify which manufacturer's loco you are talking about...

So, if you've got a Heljan 33, then look no further than a DC Kits speaker replacement for the fuel tanks.

Charlie (DC Kits) does a brilliant replacement for the Heljan fuel tanks, and I can really recommend it, make sure you get the best Alan Butcher oval speaker that Charlie sells, - well worth the money, as the sound is brilliant, I also have Pauliebanger's sound on the Zimo decoder, and the combination is as good as it gets.. (Sorry Bif, but you do great stuff as well!)

If you've got other loco's I've no knowledge of how they would best be fitted, sorry.

Regards,

Alan.

Hi Alan

Thanks for the reply.

I should have mentioned that both models are both 00 models. One Heljan and one Hornby.

I've checked the Dc kits website and found the class 33 enclosed speaker case, but I can't find an 8 ohm speaker. I've used the search facility for Alan Butcher, but it doesn't recognise the name. Hopefully Charlie will make one of his guest appearances on this forum and let me know. I'll go and rub two pennies together, that usually works

Hi Stephen,

I think Charlie, Bif, and probably Pauliebanger, along with all the great and good in the model railway world are at the Peterborough Festival today, so don't expect a reply from any of them until about 2'o'clock tomorrow!

I don't think you have to use exclusively 8ohm speakers, on either LS4 or Zimo decoders, 4ohm ones are perfectly OK.

As a case in point, I had Bif re-blow an LS4 for me 2 weeks ago at the Wigan show, with his now world famous class 55 Deltic.

When I set it up on my ESU test rig, with a bog standard 8ohm speaker, it sounded awful, so Charlie recommended using a large single 4ohm speaker, which he subsequently sold me, and, mounted into an aerosol cap with lots of BluTack, it is just wonderful!

And that's the standard 8ohm to the right..

The bad news is, that massive speaker won't go into the 00 gauge Deltic....

Which speaker do you require in 8Ohm.   Charlie

Hi Charlie

I have two Zimo fitted models. One is a Heljan class 33. The other is a Hornby class 56. The 28mm speaker in the class 33 isn't very clear and the bass enhanced speaker in the class 56 isn't that great either. I was wondering if anybody had better alternatives?

Stephen

Did you really hear those two pennies rubbing together?

The Hornby 56 will allow a Bass Reflex Supersound speaker to be inserted where the fan unit was!  IE.  take it out and see how far it can be thrown.  The Class 33 can be fitted with our (DCKits) Supersound Fueltank - Speaker unit.  'Very Loud'   As far as I am aware the Zimo sound decoders will accept 4Ohm speakers which are slightly louder than 8Ohm.

Hi

I've now fitted the speakers. You can only have the locos idling and use some of the sound functions. As soon as the models move off the sound becomes terribly distorted. Back to the drawing board.

Stephen

Can you advise exactly how you fitted these as out 26, 27 & 33 on the DCC test layout (the one we take to all the shows) don't seem to have this issue.   Charlie

JUST A THOUGHT!

When we introduced the Supersound fuel tanks we produced & tested them with our Legomanbiffo 26/27/33 Sound files on ESU, we have never ourselves used them with the Zimo so cannot comment on the results you have explained, suggest you ask Digitrains why!!    Could be how the frequency range on the file is set up.      Charlie

Stephen, Charlie, & Bif,

Sorry, been trying to get a video on here, without success, of my Heljan 26 with Digitrains/Pauliebanger's sounds on a Zimo decoder with DCKits fuel tank speaker fitment.

It all works very well, startup, tickover, then engine ramp up for moving off, and all the way up to full speed.

All sounds are fine, with whistles, horns, rail clack, couplings, etc. Heard clearly even at full chat.

FYI, checked CV 266 (overall Volume)for Zimo MX645 and it's set at 64.

Any louder, and it can cause distortion..

Keep the faith, Stephen, I'm sure if I can do it, anyone can!

Regards,

Alan.
