Adventures in code 55 Dioramas: Kings Arms and Woodland Heath TMD

With most of the scenic work completed on Gloucester Road I really wanted somewhere to work on scenic items while I complete the Scalescene Kits for GR. Not to mention taking photos outside in natural light with real backgrounds is interesting. So in my minds eye I see a canal and towpath/walkway and embankment leading to the railway. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4573237,

I am planning on using woodland scenic products, foam, risers and the like to make up the contours ground and trees. On the way home from the airport yesterday I stopped in the local hobby shop for some supplies

The canal on the closest side will have a hard edge to it for pulling your boat up to and the other bank is going to be grass and bushes, the canal is 3inches wide which works out to 42ft or so. I forsee one of my big trees on this side of the canal and maybe on the backside too with a bit of farm land/pasture on the far right. Anyway thats the plan for now.

Nipped down to the printers today and picked up the back-scene, its from https://www.scalemodelscenery.co.uk which I downloaded and took to the printers. It looks fantastic and is going to make all the difference on this and other dioramas. My plan is to have it attached to some foam supports so it remains flexible and movable.

If you look carefully in the opening picture you can see a mug, my beer, so it got me thinking; as one tends to do when mixing model trains and adult beverages. What was going to be the tow path is really wide and I need to fill in some of it or else its just going to oceans of green, pub comes to mind. So off to Scalescenes go I and we get planning permission for a pub to built. Now in my minds eye we have a pub towards the lower right on the near side of the canal with gravel parking, and beer garden with flowers and roses climbing the pub. Then there is a small tow path that leads along to the left, behind the parking area and pub through some open grasslands/brushy areas and past one of my big trees. On the far right over the canal is a pasture area that is fenced off with reeds down by the canal then off to the left is more grassy area, On the other side of the track to the far left in the corner is another tree. Anyway that's the plan at the moment

Really looking forward to taking photos on here when it is all sceniced, Have just placed an order on sceneryexpress.com for some of the different scenery items they have on there; I dont want this to be just layers of woodland scenic static grass. Looking forward to trying out some of the various other static grass products and scenic techniques.

Some work was done on the canal scene today.  To the left of the pub I wanted an area that would be like a hedged in beer garden, it will eventually have swing set and picnic tables.  On the far side of the canal I used a Heki grass mat that has longer length grass than the ones I make.

Hi there,

The scenery looks very good, and the grey clouds of the backscene really help to create depth in your stacked images.  Very nice work.

Have you decided yet on the treatment for the canal itself?  In my experience water can be a messy job, and you may need to temporarily remove or retouch the banks to the side afterward.

Great photos though - thanks for posting.  My favourite so far of the "posed" shots is the red 47 with ballast hoppers.

cheers

Thank you for the kind words.

Ben, I too have found "water" to be messy and have sort of done this module in reverse as water is going to be the last feature added, I do have a bit of a problem when it comes to the canal as I fear it's to deep; am going to need to figure some way of making a water insert that raises the level of the canal.

meanwhile, 47474 was out and about this morning
