328 colour pages, a real treat.

Sorry Gents, no previews, I'll be putting it by for a Christmas read. (Ho, Ho, Ho)

Even came with a railway themed stamp.

Thanks Arthur. I have Volume 1 and plan to buy Volume 2. Colour pictures of the Severn and Wye are so rare in books, and would be so valuable when modelling. For instance I am building anew Railway Cottages 1, 2, and 3 in their pre-rendered days and the only photos I can find are black and white - the very complex gutters and drainpipes aren't black - but what colour are they?  I'm guessing a grey/green but a colour photo sure would help.

Got my copy today - loads of colour photos of Parkend Railway Cottages. All questions answered. Green.

But now, like Arthur's copy. it's going away for Christmas.

Picked my copy up today from Simon (Titfield Thunderbolt) when he was at the Exeter Garden Railway Show.

After only a quick first glance so far, it looks to be an absolute corker. Some brilliant colour photos of Travellers Rest, for a start.

Just how 95% of these pictures have stayed out of sight for so long amazes me. The book is an absolute treasure trove - and just about everything that came before it was in black and white too.

I am looking on the internet for this book. The Book Depository doesn't have it yet, a shame as they don't charge postage.

Amazon UK has a shop in Exeter with it but they want over $78 which is far above the Lightmoor price of $45. Are there any more reasonable price around or is the cover price the best price still.

Brian.

Going on my Christmas list!

Spooky but one of the unfortunate casualties - RIP - on the two barges that brought the bridge down was Alex Bullock - no relation.

A fascinating area of railway operation no doubt

Brian,

I doubt you'd get much below the cover price, and to be honest, given the small margins that publishers and booksellers operate to over here, why would you want to?

I'd try an e-mail to Simon Castens at The Titfield Thunderbolt in Bath, see if he posts to the USA.

It's a fantastic book, and well worth the wait and the cover price.

Absolutely first class book like Volume 1. Bought mine from Lightmoor via Amazon at RRP to use the Amazon gift voucher received from one my daughters for my birthday last month. Lots of inspirational photos to tempt me away from Cwm Bach in The Valleys to the Forest of Dean. I would need a 16XX and wonder if it is viable as a 7mm RTR project. Could I sell 1,000 of them?

Brian, I live in Australia and ordered via Titfield Thunderbolt.

Book was 29.95 or thereabouts and the postage was 1 GBP less!

Having said that, I do not regret it for a second. As others have alluded too, the book is superb.

Buy it, you will still be reading it long after the pain of the postage has gone.

Depends how much you can do one for- if in the same ballpark as the Peckett (+ a bit, it does have more wheels after all) then yes, probably! Would need to be a good chunk cheaper than Lionheart's 64xx/ 74xx though, it's a lovely model but priced too high for an "I like that" purchase for most people, it has to be an "I want that".

Book is very much on my personal "I want that" list and Father Christmas has duly been informed of this, looking forward to it :)

As a BR Western Region modeller, I could certainly find a home for one. You could possibly tempt a number of BR Scottish Region modellers too and inspire a whole host of Dornoch Branch layouts. I'd like to do a Scottish Region layout myself at some point, so I can justify some lovely bright blue BR totems and enamel signs!

Just to get back on topic, my birthday is fast approaching and a copy of this book is winging its way to me as I type!

You won't be disappointed, I just cannot overstate how good this book is, and for Forest of Dean enthusiasts, especially those who like the later BR steam era, this must surely rate as the 'ultimate' book.

It is a dangerous book though if you have a model railway layout built based on black and white pictures - and not enough of those either.

This has had to be built again so it looks like the second photo. Not finished yet - two months work so far - it's the quantity and colour of the photos that do the damage. See around Page 91. :good_mini:

Thanks Captain - I have the first volume in the series and the images in that blew my socks off. How I wish our railways still looked like they did then....

Cracking publication. Neil and Ian have done themselves proud with these books.  Along with the 'Ruabon to Barmouth' volume an excellent purchase even at the cover price.  Where else could you find so many colour photos for £30?  It's given me plenty of ideas for my possible new layout, based 'Somewhere in The Forest of Dean' - with a good handful of modeller's licence!

Regarding 16XXPT I have one in 4mm from the old Sutherland/Cotswold kit.  My experimental fully beamed chassis did not work out very well sadly (the weight distribution is all wrong) but it is a possible source for one of these locos.

As predicted by the good captain, this book is absolutely superb and contains inspiration by the bucket load! If you haven't bought a copy yet, you're missing out, but there's still time to get a letter off to Santa... I sincerely hope other books in the series are planned.
