Horsetan
Branchlines already do an IoM chassis that might fit? The Branchlines chassis was designed to fit the GEM whitemetal kit. I built one many years ago to go under no.16 "Mannin". Not an easy kit to build either - the mainframes were fine, but there were some design flaws on the pony truck, especially around the pivot plate - I had terrible trouble trying to keep it all together because when I soldered one part, another part I had soldered earlier would either fall off or shift position. darrel
I've ordered the loco and the tram they don't fit in with anything I model, but then most of what I model doesn't fit in with what I model. They were just irresistible and will look nice in my display case.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 12, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 12, 2015 On the website it stressed that the models were 'free running' so perhaps it will be easy to motorise, Oxfords models are usually screwed together rather than riveted which should help. I have ordered one of each model and hopefully they will arrive next week and I will report on them then.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 16, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 16, 2015 The two models arrived well packed. They are as good as the photos suggested and 12mm gauge. Like most Oxford models they are held together with screws but motorising will mean a fair bit of chopping around of the Tram chassis and interior and a new chassis for the 2-4-0 Seen here balanced on my 009 Xmas mini
BG John
Looks like it's a good thing I'll be doing my narrow gauge modelling in 7mm scale then, or I might have to buy a few!
MikeTrice
Mine also arrived today, however it has been grabbed by SWMBO as my Christmas present so I cannot see how it is put together or photograph. Bah humbug!
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 16, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 16, 2015 Still awaiting mine, I ordered them last Thursday so I think I will have to get on to them to find out where they are.
RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 16, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 16, 2015 Give them time I ordered as soon as they were available too and they said in the email about postage they had a lot of orders.
RMweb Premium Nile Posted December 17, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 17, 2015 A box from Douglas has just arrived, here is what I found inside. The model removed from its display case. Lots of separate details. Including the handrail. And some gubbins in the cab. The underside. The rods are fixed, as part of the cylinder-brake gear-steps moulding, but the wheels are free to rotate. More revealed. Although covered in paint, the wheels are metal. The axles are 2mm. Inside the body. The final screw holds the cab onto the body. The footplate and boiler-tank parts are die cast, the cab and keeper plate are plastic. There is no glazing in the windows.
ben racey
I did spend all the trip to and from Warley lobbying Dave Hammersley about doing a chassis kit, and he did observe that he started drawing the chassis for one about 20 years ago, so with a bit of luck there could be a Roxey etched chassis on route - best that more confirm to him that the demand is there. jon Don't branch lines already do an etched kit/chassis? RMweb Gold PaulRhB Posted December 17, 2015 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2015 Wouldn't it be interesting if Oxford Rail took that step . .
Red Devil
For those wanting to open up the tram, it's a bit like the Corgi Feltham with the retaining screws behind the headlights.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 18, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 18, 2015 Mine arrived first thing this morning. A quick inspection shows everything to be OK but a bit disappointed with the trolley pole on the tram, just a stick and a blob of bright red plastic, easy enough to deal with. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 18, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 18, 2015 A box from Douglas has just arrived, here is what I found inside. The model removed from its display case. IOM_01.JPG Lots of separate details. IOM_02.JPG Including the handrail. IOM_03.JPG And some gubbins in the cab. IOM_04.JPG The underside. IOM_05.JPG The rods are fixed, as part of the cylinder-brake gear-steps moulding, but the wheels are free to rotate. More revealed. IOM_06.JPG Although covered in paint, the wheels are metal. The axles are 2mm. Inside the body. IOM_07.JPG The final screw holds the cab onto the body. IOM_08.JPG The footplate and boiler-tank parts are die cast, the cab and keeper plate are plastic. There is no glazing in the windows. I haven't gone to the trouble of taking mine apart yet but here are a few observations. On mine the handrail is out of shape particularily on the right hand side where it is twisted so a wire replacement will be made. The handrails on the cab are part of the cab moulding so will have to be cut off and replaced. The 'gubbins' in the cab are the fire irons and the brake handle, easily replaced with etched examples. There is what appears to be a locomotive jack sitting on the right hand tank, a touch up with a bit of paint needed to highlight the details. Turning to the tram, the 'red blob' is integral with the trolly base which means that the trolley pole can only be set for one direction. However the trolley base appears to be a separate item from the car body so can easily be replaced.
darrel
Still waiting for mine to arrive what does the boiler back head look like?
RMweb Premium Nile Posted December 19, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 19, 2015 Nothing like a boiler back head.
RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted December 19, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 19, 2015 (edited) Still waiting for mine to arrive what does the boiler back head look like? Theres some detail there but not very much and there is very little in the way of a firebox. This though leaves plenty of scope for added details or as someone said on the 'Skarloey' thread the addition of footplate crew figures would hide the lack of detail. darrel
My loco and tram arrived this morning they are fabulous models. The loco is stunning. Don't think anyone else has mentioned the lining in the loco but it is really neatly done.
MikeTrice
It's Christmas so prezzie unwrapped and photographed. Sorry about the dust on the first photo. Also tried to include a photo with the backhead detail "lightened". I also note that on my model, and by the look of it on others, that the front buffer beam is not square when viewed in plan view.
BG John
Shame it's not 7mm scale, or one might end up converted to 2' 4¼" gauge. I need another O-16.5 loco!
Mike Buttell
As can be imagined, these models have caused much excitement here on the Island. As I had an old Gem chassis in the spares box, I have experimented with this as a starting point. I reckon one of the smaller motors will fit inside and will try this out. RMweb Gold Tim Hall Posted January 4, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2016 Argh! Must resist, well for a week or two at least. Four new car tyres last week, and accountants paid today
MikeTrice
Resistance is futile! A couple of images with the model placed on some Peco HOm track. Interestingly on my model the bogie wheels have a larger back to back and need adjusting to match the drivers.
