Class 17 chassis

Well new chassis turned up only 2 days after I ordrerd it! It really was a horrible green but its now black. Nice slow speed control and was very slow at first but after a couple of minutes running it settled down nicely. Not the fastest of runners probably similar to a Bachmann cl25 and bit noisey very much like the two cl128 DPU'S that I have sounding like somethings vibrating but cant see what it is. Only pulls .2amp which compared to a Heljan 47 which pulls .7amp is a relief. When I bought my D8529 back in 2012 it was marked up as £30 non runner so I put it away as a future project only forgetting where it got put! It was only when I took the body off did irealise that it was a completely stripped bare chassis with no front lights in the body. Couldn't figure out for why it only had tail lights until I had reard through the cl17 thread. That made me larf as at least I Figured out why the lights didnt work! Just need to find a GFYE body now!

All in all one happy bunny

Long time lurker, but first post from me, so apologies to do it in a fairly old thread.

Is there any way to visually tell the difference between an original and updated Heljan Class 17 chassis? I have a few models that I purchased years ago that I am just starting to convert to P4 and would like to know which, if any, I am likely to have problems with.

I looked through the threads on here and done some google searches, but failed to answer my own question so far.

Thanks,

Roy

There is no visible difference between old and new chassis. The original chassis affected were the early releases up to 1705 but not all had the tight bogie tower gearboxes. I have stripped loads of them that were returned only to find less than 25 per cent of them faulty. Remember this model has a three pole motor, much smaller than that fitted to the larger diesel models, and it is also geared down to a lower top end speed. Because of this many were sent back when in fact they were OK....................just slow. The motor will only get hot if there is a tight gearbox problem and even this can be rectified by stripping down, de-greasing and light oiling the gear towers. If you are converting to P4 then you will need to change the wheels anyway so that is a good time to check for any tightness in the drive train.

Thanks for the info. I have two or three that may be affected then - I have a 1701, 1705 and a 1799 that I believe was a very early release. I will give them a service as you suggest and run them in gently one at a time.
