Turbo_Tim
The news doesn't seem to have filtered onto RMWeb anywhere yet, but there are plans afoot for an Open Day at St Phillips Marsh on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the HST and the HST Depot. Only info so far is on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1680765778830585/ .

RMweb Premium HillsideDepot Posted April 27, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 27, 2016 There will be a shuttle bus service from Temple Meads to "The Marsh" on Monday run with a mix of accessible low-floor and vintage preserved vehicles. If the weather is good there will be an open-topper in use, but the present forecast suggests that a closed top will be a better idea on that "card" (local bus crew word for what the railway calls a diagram). I will be conducting either a Bristol FS or RML Routemaster depending on what the Met Office predict, and my driver, Tom, is a keen modeller too (early '90s diesels), so please say "hello" if you travel with us on the 82B. RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted April 27, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 27, 2016 Can any one advise? Where is the actual pedestrian entrance to the depot? Chris
Turbo_Tim
Problem is there are at least 3 that I know of. I reckon it'll be on the stabling sidings next to the wheel lathe in which case they'll probably use the entrance opposite Sparke Evans Park on Albert Road. Alternatively there's another next to the rail overbridge in Albert Crescent.
RMweb Gold PhilH Posted April 28, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 28, 2016 Although not exactly an HST an interloper in the form of 46100 Royal Scot will there to add to the fun and frolics, not sure whether it will be in light steam or not. RMweb Premium HillsideDepot Posted April 28, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 28, 2016 Can any one advise? Where is the actual pedestrian entrance to the depot? Chris Still trying to get an answer, but shifts and keeping the day job going mean I've not had an answer from my contact, who has asked the question of a colleague. Hopefully, I will have something soon.
aforsyth
Looking forward to it, Adrian. I will be coming by train from Chippenham to TM partly to get a ride on 82B! What's the best time to visit - earlier or later? It'll be the first time my 4 year old son or I have ever got to an official depot open day, despite me growing up near Swindon in the 80s. Worth mentioning that for anyone making a journey West on the GWR mainline like me on Monday - there is the addition of another 'free' bus trip due to engineering work between Swindon and Bath. eastwestdivide
Power car 43048 "T.C.B. Miller MBE" has begun its migration south, just seen heading through S Yorks all by itself - they do look odd travelling singly.

Alan Alan, I will be travelling from Chippenham, but have to collect a bus on the way! The 82B departs from the lower level at BTM (to the relief of double decker bus drivers who will be well aware of the canopy on the upper level which is 'invisible' from the cab!) and all buses are to be available from 09.15. All the duty cards (7 buses) say "shuttle until [lunch break]" and with a similar "shuttle until" instruction for the afternoon. There will, of course be staggered lunch breaks to keep the service going. As for best time to visit, who can tell? I think that will probably depend on the weather forecast on Monday, even the bus duties are all endorsed "likely to change on the day" so the organisers don't know either. Should be a good day - I'd say go early so you have a long there as you want, rather than going late and running out of time.
RMweb Gold Ely_South Posted April 29, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 29, 2016 Power car 43048 "T.C.B. Miller MBE" has begun its migration south, just seen heading through S Yorks all by itself - they do look odd travelling singly. Interesting; thanks. Good to see that particular power car being made available, what with the significance of its name. I'd imagined (with no knowledge at all) that the EMT power car was going to pick up 41001 and Mk3s from Loughborough/Ruddington. Anyone know if that's the plan? Looking forward to this one. aforsyth
Just received this in an update email for the event: Unfortunately due to various operational issues beyond our control, Rood Ashton Hall, The Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Tangmere will not be appearing at the St Philips Marsh Open Day. However LMS locomotive, Royal Scot, is already at the depot and will be part of the Open Day. Some other exhibits may also not be the specific locomotive previously advertised. We hope this will not dampen your enjoyment of what will be a fantastic day .. and .. Special Livery Unveiling: This is planned for approximately 11.30 Shame those big GWR beasties won't be there, but my son is mainly interested in the HSTs... such is progress. We'll try to get there for the HST livery unveiling ceremony. Alan Edit: fixed silly mistake...

Adrian - thank you, but it occurs to me I don't know how to get to the lower level BTM bus stops you mention, having always caught (single decker) buses on the main station forecourt under the canopy. Where do I head for from the station exit please?
Glorious NSE
Something that can be combined if you're spending a day in Bristol (especially if you were looking for a steam fix!) - looks like the Bristol Harbour railway is operating the same day:https://www.bristolmuseums.org.uk/m-shed/whats-on/train-rides/

Where do I head for from the station exit please? The lower level is by Bristol & Exeter House, to the left of the main approach road as you leave the front on the station. There are steps down to it from opposite the British Transport Police office. I think there is also access from the station subway direct into that area as they use if for rail replacement buses - I'm guessing they'll open that on Monday. Either way, I'm sure it will be well signed.
