It seems like only yesterday that India had an extensive of metre gauge steam-hauled passenger trains, but then that was 9188 when I was there! Happy memories....

And it takes us how long to do less than 300kms of the Great Western???

It looks like it will have taken over 2 years to do 16 miles on the GWML (that is measured from first visible signs of work on the ground to a likely date for going live).  Even if the section in question had gone live on the originally planned date it would still have taken 18 months (or more).

That's probably a more realistic figure for how long it takes than the Indian one.

I also gather from Indian colleagues that they don't have enough electrical generating capacity to meet current needs (especially after droughts, as quite a lot of power comes from hydroelectric plants) so I'm left wondering where all this extra electricity for the trains will come from.

(Or the electric locos for that matter.....)

Not to worry...India is famous for un-realistic targets. It's just hype from the new government. They couldn't do a 300km stretch in 5 years. I'll leave you'll to do the math.
