LNER S1 humpshunter

Recommended Posts

Good morning "Big Engine" fans

I love big tank engines and am thinking of converting a Robinson O4 into his humpshunter.

Its looks basically; sidetanks & new cab/bunkers added to a O4.

The way members are using placticard to modify locos, I must have a chance of converting one.

Does anyone know af a 4mm drawing of the S1?

Isinglass do not list one in their catalogue.

I think the S1 would look great beside the Raven T1 and Robinson L1

Thanks

PDH Drawings certainly list a drawing for a GCR S1 0.8.4 hump shunter. They cab be contacted on pdhdrawings@ntlworld.com. They will then e-mail you their extensive catalogue of drawings to order from.

I hope to eventually get an S1 preferably with the booster engine and hope that someone will come out with an etched kit sooner or later. Perhaps a reduction in artwork size from the 7mm kit mentioned above may be worth investigating? I have an old Kingdom Kits GCR L1 2.6.4 tank engine kit which is a similar hefty beast, the kit took a lot of work to get the poor castings to an acceptable level.

Hope the above helps re the drawing.

As another fan of big tank engines, then I shall really look forward to seeing an S1. And, as you say, to see an S1 with a T1 and Robinson L1 (and don't forget the A6 and A7, which were pretty large tank locos) would be quite something.

I'll check with a few of my modelling mates to see whether anyone has a copy of that magazine and drawing.

Cheers

Mike

Hi eveyone and thanks for the info.

The S1 plans are moving forward (slowly as usual with me)

I think the S1's as built by Gresley are the better body lookers with the side window cab and angled front to tanks, but The booster fitted bogie with connecting rods is grotesque, so it would have to be an original engine.

It would look good alongside my L1, T1, A7, R1, but not A6 as it was basically a passenger engine.

  • 8 years later...

I have just found this rather old topic and wondered .....

Has anyone built a 4mm model of this loco ?

If so I would appreciate any help as I have recently acquired a set of 4mm etches for the LNER/BR S1 loco ....

I need help with identifying all the other castings etc I would need ?

Would also love to see any photos if you did build this type of loco ?

All help much appreciated, many thanks,

 Cheers, Ian

It would be a hell of challenge to get the booster cranks working - and on a bogie too! Never seen this done before.

Only suited to large radius operation to avoid fouling the rear of the footsteps. You can see that the connecting balance pipes between side and bunker tanks have been 'lifted clear' on the booster equiped locos

I have a set of etches too, which may get a bit of attention one day. Mine were from Mike Edge of Judith Edge kits fame. Not a complete kit by any means but one of his own "scratchbuild aid" sets that he does for himself but is willing to supply if asked.

Were yours from the same source or are there others out there?

Reactvating this oil topic has brought it to my attention, and set the gray cells to thinking. A S1 I picked up second hand built from plasticard has a brass chassis K's style and had a X04 power unit on purchase, how ever the wheels are flangless on the centre pairs to go round toy bends and are not necessary for me but I haven't yet done anything about it yet on the premis of if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Now though it's set me thinking about grafting a Bachman chassis under it.....hum!

Hi, yes the etches were from Mike Edge,   I just need help with all the other bits I require, or else I am afraid it is going to be a non-starter !

Shame really, I was hoping Mike may have been able to help with my request in at least some ways....

I can't help with fittings at the moment because I only built one of these (from the original batch) some time ago and didn't take any mouldings. As and when I build another (probably 69904 for Wentworth Junction) I'll take moulds off the chimney and dome at least.
