Hi all,

OK - Time to get on with the next project then!

All the other DHR stuff is part of an ongoing program of work for the owner of Darjeely - Eddie Bristow.

He has a layout that was first built in 1984 and some of the stock is as old as the layout!

So - he has a couple of things ongoing with the layout which will give it a full refurb and updating of track and scenery.

As part of the future program he hopes to replace all the worn out stock!

That's where I come in....

I've already got going with some of the stock he has decided to replace and  have made a start on the stock that will be 'new to the layout'.

At present - all the B Class locos he has on the layout are Langley body kits on Arnold chassis.

The chassis that is intended to carry the kit has been discontinued for some time and it's replacement has different dimensions which make it a pain to fit the cylinders and valve gear.

He is having a go at modifications to make the kit fit and see if this is a possibble way forward.

In the meantime......

I have the Backwoods Miniatures Darjeeling and Himalayan Railway Class B 0-4-0 etched kit.

SO, I build this one and see how he gets on with putting the newer Arnold chassis into his existing fleet.

Thanks

Next Time - I will have read the kit instructions - promise!

Hi all,

Time to get this all back on the main burner!

Eddie sold his layout - Darjeely last year - so no more stock for him!

However, on the strength of the models I had done for him, I have another interested party asking for DHR stock to be built!

I've been sent a Langley Class B with what was thought to be the correct Arnold chassis for it. But it isn't!

Can someone jog my memory by giving me the Arnold reference for the correct chassis as I'll need to find one somewhere.

Over the years Arnold have produced at least 3 different chassis types for the various 0-6-0 tank engines that have modelled and that's without taking livery variations into consideration.

Thanks

For those who are interested the DHRS have a new book about the B class locomotives which is supposed to be available from July, see their online shop. Mine is on order and they said it would be possible to collect it from a railway event this weekend.

Hi all,

I'm back on the DHR modelling again....

I have an additional commission to add to/extend the Darjeeling Shed lightbox diorama that I did for someone.

As a result it has awakened my interest in the DHR and modelling it for myself.

More information on my other DHR threads as relevent to them.

On this thread - it's time to dig out the Class B kit(s) and get some progress on them!

I have some leftover static Class B tanks after doing all the ones for the Darjeeling shed project. Not much use for anything except static models, but they were out of scale anyway and based on the Class B that is in the UK with modifications (except for a tender).

Possibly I'll just repaint these and do slight modifications to backdate them for various periods.

that's not a priority though, but if the airbrush is out - why not?

Thanks

Phil H

Hi all,

Well - I'm back on the DHR theme again - only this time all for myself.

Some time ago I built some baseboards for an intended model of Rangtong Station and it's approaches.

Now - I've dug those out of the storage space and had a fresh look at them, I'll need to do some renovations before they can be used.

But, the intent is to get the layout made and to a showabe level.

The motivation to get on with thei is the range of new models that have (or will) hit the market.

No longer do you need to rely on Worsley Works and Langley Models to get the motive power and stock that is needed for a DHR model layout.

Yes - it's all the fault of models becoming available from various 3D Print outlets.

So, more to come over the next few weeks.

Thanks

Phil H

A couple of images of my D class (the Garret) are up on my flickr:

On track 50350810787_74e34039a9_b.jpg

in 5" gauge (so 3 3/4" scale...).  It has lots of work to be done- I have a fair amount of plumbing bits to add, in the form of injectors (x3) & most of the rest of the valves/fittings.  (but no pipework yet...)

The track won't be as extreme as the test track- I've got 30' radius curves (the real one did 60'  !) and 2% grades.

If anyone has any more history on this model, I'd love to hear it.  The model dates to the late 70's, was built for a dentist along with 3 other engines.  I'd say it was semi professionally built- he didn't build it.  I'd love to know where the drawings were sourced.  I have the book on it, which includes a fair amount on the B class which the D was supposed to replace 2:1

Hi James,

A bit big for me - but looking good....

A question though....

Was the dentist based in Yorkshire - possibly Bradford/Leeds?

I'm asking as I visited one of my model engineering pals in the late 70's and he was building one of these andhad already built a Class B and a DHR Railcar for the same customer.

Thanks

I understand he was on the isle of Wight, but its all a bit 3rd hand to me.  I know there was a 5" railway, that ended in a pond (literally...), there was a K-38 ish loco, the D class, a Wren and a Shay.  The K38, Wren and D class share cylinders- they are 2 5/16 by 3" on the D class.  We assume based on workmanship that the dentist did a small amount of work, and most of it was done by someone else- there are definitely 2 hands which worked on the engines.

Dad (on the left) has the Wren in Ontario, I got the D because the boiler is quite a bit over the Ontario model maximum size.  (but under for BC...).  He sold the Shay and the K38 which was a monster of a 5" loco.  (though the D will be heavier, it will be easier to sectionalize to move...)
