Dr Gerbil-Fritters
That's excellent news - ME track is like rocking horse poop in the UK, I've never found any. >edit< solid machined blades as well. Oddly, code 70 #6s really ought to have solid hinged blades! But never mind, a real boon for us ISL modellers... steve1
I've ordered ME track direct from Walthers with no problem and used it on 4 layouts. Mind you, I will be interested to see what the Peco product is like. steve

steve1
The shipping and customs etc must be astronomical? Nope, no trouble of that sort. Walters were advertising a track sale and I ordered 10 lengths I think it was. (This was about 3-4 years ago) They came through at a good price and I wasn't stung by customs or excess carriage charge. I have ordered stuff from Walthers through Model Junction in Slough and, as they are authorised Walthers dealers, it all comes through without any hassle. They can supply anything shown in the Walthers catalogue. No connection with shop except as very satisfied customer. steve

pH
I usually only skim the Athearn website to see if there are any new announcements for the roadname I'm interested in. There usually aren't any, so I don't look in any more detail. However, today I looked further at a couple of items and was surprised to see two different prices quoted for them. There is a 'retail price' and a 'your price'. The second one is 15% less than the first. As I said, I don't usually look at items in detail, but I don't remember seeing this before. Is it an online discount? Or is it also being applied to items ordered through retailers? Was it announced - if so, when?
Talltim
I believe Athearn are attempting to create more direct sales by selling at a price a bit higher than they sell to retailers but keeping all the money. The discount is basically most of the retailer markup. Can’t see it going down well with retailers...
mdvle
Rapido has announced VIA Rail "wraps" as well as a new run of regular VIA F40PH-2Ds. Wraps include Home Hardware, CBC 50th, Telus, Kool-Aid, Operation Lifesaver, and Coors Light Silver Bullet Express and are all based on sufficient orders being placed to allow production to proceed. If someone is willing to pay the $50,000 license fee Spiderman II would become possible. Regular VIA Rail (as delivered, Canada scheme, and Canda (rebuilt)) are also offered. Order deadline is July 1 2018, delivery estimated Fall 2018. https://rapidotrains.com/ho-scale-via-f40-relaunch/ Edited April 13, 2018 by mdvle

RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted April 13, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 13, 2018 I think the Athearn move to encourage direct sales is just part of a wider trend. As more and more specialist goods are sold primarily on-line then direct sales (possibly linked to production to pre-order to eliminate inventory hanging around the warehouse for any longer than it takes to turn orders around) it's harder to see why a manufacturer wouldn't cut out an additional profit layer which can reduce retail price and also increase revenue to the manufacturer. NickBrad
https://rapidotrains.com/ho-ge-b36-7/ I hope this gets a NS version at some point, now I have a little more income, I'd like to splash out, unless an S scale loco can be procured for a reasonable price

NickBrad
I'd have to say and S3 would be great, although an SW1500 or even 44 tonner would suit me for a shunting layout.
RMweb Gold Regularity Posted May 9, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 9, 2018 I do have an S1 and and S2, plus a 44 tonner, all in brass, but they are not for sale! I know that both the S3 and S4 were produced in brass, plus there is the notorious Sunset-Miller kit from the 50s for the S4. On the other hand, I also have an un-built Smoky Mountain Model Works kit for a GE 70 Tonner (modified Athern drive, not NWSL) which I am unlikely to build. Also a SMMW body (only) kit for a 44 tonner: you can buy the NWSL Stanton drive plus underframe casting from Jim King via his website: http://smokymountainmodelworks.com/S_loco_kits.html. Beware, though, that as it is a smaller market than O scale, the development costs for S scale have to be recovered over shorter and smaller production runs, with the consequence that there is often no price difference between 0 and S scale models of comparable detail/quality. NickBrad
Thanks for that link, the price for the complete 44 tonner kit doesn't seem too far out, (shipping and customs charges aside,) I like that it comes from Asheville too, considering I would be using it to replicate a real loco on a shortline not far away from there. RMweb Gold Regularity Posted May 13, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 13, 2018 There is a River Raisin Models brass 44 tonner on eBay just now. These are excellent models, well detailed and very smooth running. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F332650405546
RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted May 13, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 13, 2018 The River Raisin models were made in collaboration with Overland and manufactured by Ajin. That's just about as good as it gets. My own poison is US brass diesels in HO and Overland/Ajin are by far my favourites.

Not for me though as I gave US 0 scale an expensive try a few years ago and that convinced me that I am thoroughly wedded to H0 scale. Plus, I know no-one else personally who does S scale. But, it is awfully nice though. Watch out for those import duties. John.
