DB BR18.3 Valve gear

Hi there,

I have a Bachmann/Liliput 18.3 with poorly valve gear. I tried getting the complete assembly through Bachmann UK, but Liliput have sold on all their parts for these to a german shop, which charges a fortune for postage.

Since I'm supposed to be a modeller, I figured I'd have a go at fixing it myself, except the motion appears very different from standard Walshaerts. Wikipedia tells me they called it a Heusinger motion, except wiki also tells me it's the same as Walshaerts, which it clearly isn't.

Could someone who has one please do a short bit of video of the valve gear working, and upload it/send it to me? Or even better, if they're in the vicinity of Cambridge/Newmarket, let me have a look myself?

2 years on, and I've finally had a look at this issue!! I also have looked up some more terminology so I can describe what is wrong a bit better!

The issue lies with the valve stem on one side behaving differently from the other. Unfortunately it's in this area the Heusinger motion seems to differ from Walschaerts - there is an extra link in the combination lever.

18.3

On one side this link moves with the combination lever, and the valve stem moves in and out, on the other side the combination lever pivots on this link and the valve stem is stationary. Looking at the youtube videos posted earlier, the second of these seems more common on the model, but I've seen hints of the other movement also happening, and in some cases both on the same model, like mine. You can see it from 4:05 in this video - the visible side has the valve stem stationary, the shadow of the far side you can make out the valve stem sliding:

Having taken the model apart, expecting to find the valve stem had just come loose on one side, it looks like they're supposed to slide, there just seems to be more friction in the linkages on one side. Until I figure out how to make it work as it should, I'll just live with it!! Edited by Memphis32
