Penistone Coal Drops help

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps,

I'm doing a bit of research for a future N gauge project and yesterday visited Penistone to trace and photograph the remains of the MSW. And i came across the coal drops West of the station by the overbridge before the small goods shed.

I've looked but cannot find any reference to these in books, and wondered if anyone has any info on when these were last used?

For those that haven't seen them the last arch is in severe danger of collapse now, all wooded runs on top are rotted through, and some have dropped into the coal area underneath.

However if you peer closely you can still see the buffers (wooden) at the end by the roundabout.

Any help greatly appreciated.

cheers

Dave

Hi Dave,

A group of us from Huddersfield did a walkround at Penistone in early 1978 with thoughts of doing an N gauge model.

The drops were still rail connected but did not appear to be in use with the hopper bottoms already removed.

The local coal merchant was still there but using the under drop area to park his lorries.

Useful links...

http://www.stocksbridgehs.co.uk/

Both of these societies have archives of written and pictorial types.

Penistone library used to have a full set of the local almanac dating back to the early 1920's.

There are also publications of this nature at the Stocksbridge Museum but I'm unsure about access.

Also look for the book by David Hey

Not sure who has the photos that were taken on our visit - lost touch with most of the group a long time ago.

Also check with Huddersfield Railway Modellers to see if they have photos and info in their library.

Thanks

edit - Quick FlickR search has some photos.

Are those alongside the L&Y line because there are a very similar set at Lockwood that are easy to access and look at.

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

I know the Lockwood ones all to well!

However, the Penistone ones are just as easy to access as they are almost alongside the road.

A couple of photos in the links I've given include photos showing this.

A vague memory seems to be yelling at me saying that these are not the only coal drops in Penistone though.

Thanks

Hi Dave, haven't got either of the above, but try Graham Clarke of Netherwood siding for the 76 he did the drawings for the etches for the 7mm version and may have access.  The only overhead works drawings I've got are the one for Lancaster Morecambe Heysham.

NRM have outline plan, pipe and rod and end views of EM1, they are in the old OPC microfiche list - 12118, 12119 & 12120.

But Dave, HOW will you get the models of the class 76s, no-one makes them in N????

If only there was some way a bunch of likeminded people could come together and organise something....

I'm saying nothing much at this stage. ;-)
