Ais Gill summit N gauge layout.

I recently bought Hornby's Lyddle End East station buildings and Home Farm building to go with my Bachmann's Ais Gill signal box and I was wondering if they all can be adapted to do a N gauge version of Dent?  I realise the the station building would have to be repainted as the real Dent station has a reddish brick colour.

The station building is the same basic "small" design as the Lyddle End one, with an extension at the south end. Home Farm is clearly different to the S&C SM's house but if you repaint to match then they would all look part of a whole. Dent is stone but is a brownish/greyish sandstone, not quite sure what the Hornby one is trying to portray ! Even the stations further south in the limestone dales aren't that grey !

I've ordered the baseboards and should arrive soon, so I can start track laying after they have been assembled.  I'm seriously thinking of using British finescale track and pointwork instead of Peco to give a better look.

Does anyone know how to change the header on this thread?

My Farish Duchess of Hamilton which has been "breathed on" by Digitrains with DCC and sound hauls my SLOA set on my test track.  Also I have just got the Farish Class 108 DMU with DCC and sound fitted.  Both will be running on the Ais Gill layout once I've managed to get the baseboards built.

I also have a Farish Blue Pullman already and two Farish Jubilee's coming, one will remain as 45596 Bahamas but the other will be renumbered and renamed 45562 Alberta, a 1967 S&C favourite.  Again, all will be DCC and sound fitted by Digitrains.

Sorry about the poor quality video, it was taken on my phone but gives an idea of what I'm doing.

My two Farish Jubilee's have arrived and they will be both DCC'd and sound fitted by Digitrains.  45596 "Bahamas" will remain as it is but the other will be renumbered detailed as 45562 "Alberta" in it's last year of operation.  Both were S&C favourites and though Alberta is no longer with us, a lot of spare parts and the tender went to Bahamas, so she lives on through her.

I finally managed to get the time to start layout building and as you can see, I've built the baseboard, laid out the cork underlay, where buffer stops should be, positioned the point work and signal box for the scenic section.  Even though it's a simple track plan, I think I've got it more or less right but if anyone has any sensible suggestions before I seriously start laying the track down, they would be welcome.

Please ignore the oval of track with the 3 car DMU on as that's my temporary test track  :onthequiet:  :onthequiet:  :onthequiet:

Here are four loco's bar the 9F that have been renumbered and weathered by TMC from stock Graham Farish and Dapol loco's seen on the S&C in the mid 60's to the end of steam.  There is Jubilee 45562 "Alberta" in 1967 condition, Britannia 70028 "Royal Star", also in 1967 rundown condition without it's nameplates, WD 2-8-0 90243 and finally 9F 92133 which will be renumbered to another 1967 S&C regular on the Long Megs.

I would have put more posts but unfortunately I was the victim of a burglary and most of my model railway stuff got lifted, so I'm now slowly replacing items stolen and will be doing more posts as I restart building the layout.

Thought I'd give you guys a heads up on progress since the summer.  I've decided to build a Ais Gill themed layout on a standard internal door after seeing something similar at the Great Electric Train show and I thought I'd show you what can be created on a 6ft 6 x 30 ins board.

Constructive comments are welcome.

Just a couple of questions to ask the group.  The run off's at the end of the refuge sidings where the points diverge to get back onto the main line, seem a little long compared to pictures of the real things.  Does anyone have any decent photographs or information they would be willing to share as I'd like to try and get them to look right.  Also, the two huts by the signal box, I'm trying to get decent pictures of those but I'm considering using Hornby's Lyddle End N8055 Lamp Hut and N8056 Platelayers Hut as substitutes.  Would they be a good match?

I can't give you a definitive answer on the sidings at the moment, I counted sleepers on a photo to get the length for one of mine but it's at home and I'm at work right now. It may be the right length though, photos from ground level looking along foreshorten the view, and seeing them above isn't a view you usually get, but they often seem longer when you do (look at aerial views of road markings like "SLOW", or how long a lot of turnouts on the full sized railway really are for examples).
