Weedkilling Coaches

Does anyone know if Invicta still plan to release the Weedkilling coaches in the Fisons green livery to match the tank wagons they brought out a while back???

I bought the wagons ages ago, but they have remained unused, useless without the accompanying coaches!!!

Nothing like a quick follow up to the tankers then, I recall buying the wagons years ago. Still at least the coaches appear on the horizon but I will not be holding my breath waiting for their arrival!

I looked again at Invicta's website and noticed that delivery for the two coaches is scheduled for late 2018.

Can anyone put an era to these coaches? I had originally thought that they were 70'/80's but I am now having second thoughts. Pictures that I have found suggest that the coaches pre-date the 70's.

Looks like it might be late 1980's.

Further delving into the RCTS informative website reveals that the coaches were converted for weedkilling purposes in 1975. The usual Fisons weedkiling train of that time comprised 3 or 4 coaches (of which Invicta are producing 2) made up of 3 ex LMS porthole stock and a BR Gloucester RC&W DTC ex 56315. Initially they were liveried in yellow and green before they became the property of Schering Agrochemicals Ltd and were painted into that companies livery of green with a white stripe as will be produced by Invicta during the winter of 1987/88. Coaches were withdrawn in 1989.

Conclusion is that they ran in the Invicta livery for about 3 years in the late 80's which is not quite the era I was hoping for! Looks like a re-spray required to cheaper Bachmann LMS porthole coaches is required to re-create the yellow and green I want. A shame for me because I had hoped that Invicta would produce an off the shelf solution for my requirements.

You are overlooking the use of red and cream in the mid 1980s.

Just think that 20 years or so ago some of the hobby would probably have accepted a Bachmann Derby Lightweight DTC as a close enough compromise for 56315 to make up this train. How times have changed, for the better.

Further researching of the RCTS website states that red and cream was applied around 1981/82 following a company name change. Given this is my chosen era combined with the later livery that Invicta have chosen for their coaches and the absence of a BR Gloucester RC&W DTC, my planned weedkilling train has withered away!

I've been searching to try and establish what hauled these sets and I can't see them with a loco in the green livery. Previous incarnations seem to show an assortment of locos in rail blue. Can anyone tell me, where they given over to Hunslett Barclay haulage, or was that just the Chipman train?

Apologies if this has been mentioned before. I was wondering when these weed killing coaches are likely to arrive. As I've had these on preorder since they were announced so assume after CNY shutdown we may hear something possibly soon?

Cheers

I have one emerald green TTA and materials to do a second. I also have the two coaches on order , because I suppose I could justify it on a mid-late 80s Midlands layout

But what Invicta are doing makes no provision for the spray trailer . From some of the photos this was used for driving the train when propelling ?  and the train had a loco at only one end - a 25 seems common.

So -what's to be done, on a small terminus/FY layout? I could top and tail 2 coaches + 2 tanks with two blue 20s . I suppose I could run round - but the loop is short and may not take the lot. How could the DMU trailer be credibly fudged??

The relevant page is not showing on Invicta's site, though the coaches are still shown on the front page

Pre-ordered when first announced, received phone call from Invicta this morning advising that coaches had arrived and did I still want them. Said yes, paid and should get the coaches tomorrow.

They did mention that they have been phoning around to confirm orders but that I was only one of a few who were at home to take the call.

Given that I want the coaches in an earlier livery, I am trying to work out if these are new or a re-paint of previous Bachmann products. If they are a re-paint then I suspect that I would be better off buying the previous issues second hand and re-painting them in the livery I seek. Can anyone clarify? better still and assuming they are reprises, what are the previous issue Bachmann product codes?

Any assistance gratefully received

Hello,

Having chatted with Kerry @Invicta model rail, over the weekend this ltd edition run was originally a Modelzone commission which was then taken forward by Invicta, as its taken a number of years in the interim for this to materialise.  So to answer I'd say they were new.

KMRC also did a chipman weedkilling Ltd Edition set some years ago (2014?) based on BR Mk1's, (39-000P Bachmann OO Gauge Chipman Weedkiller Train coach pack).

Hope that helps

Cheers

Peter

Here are the coaches and the water tanks.

The coaches are Bachmann’s LMS Portholes. I thought I might have attached the pipes and dummy couplings to the wrong vehicle when I saw what looks like a reservoir on the end of the other coach but it’s also present on the red and cream Portholes, so it can’t have anything to do with the spray.

A little more research following the last 2 posts leads me to conclude that I could use Bachmann's 39-450 and 39-460/1 as base models and re-spray them in the older style livery that I seek. Against this, the cost of Bachmann Portholes either new or second hand remains high making negligble saving against the Invicta models which I can run as they are (albeit outside of my modelling era) until I get around to re-painting. On this basis I shall be investing in Invicta's coaches in the next few days.

Thanks to those who have posted responses to my questions.

I am not sure at what point the weedkiller was added to the mix but the pipes for the water/weedkiller to be sprayed ran from the TTA's along the side of the coaches. From the pictures above, these are not obviously present and I do'nt know if the Invicta models have any additional detailing to replicate the pipes. If they do'nt then it should not be too difficult to mimic them. Paul Bartlett's web site has a picture that shows the pipework
