Bachmann 30-165 The Thanet Flyer Train Set

The Thanet Flyer Train Set due to be release later this year will contain N class locomotive numbered 1854 painted Malachite Green, plus 2 Bulleid coaches in Malachite Green.

Two N class locomotives were painted in this livery, 1817 and 1854.

Number 1854 has previously been issued as a single locomotive by Bachmann (albeit apparently the label on the box may say "1864").

Accordingly I sent the following e-mail to Bachmann:

The N class locomotive in set 30-165 (Thanet Flyer set) in Malachite Green is numbered 1854. Bachmann previously issued this locomotive with the exact same livery and number. Could you consider changing the number of the locomotive in the Thanet Flyer set to 1817, which was the other locomotive to carry the Malachite green livery, to avoid duplication please? Thank you.

Their reply was:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

I can confirm that the Bachmann Branchline OO scale ‘Thanet Flyer’ train set (30-165) is currently in production and will include the N Class locomotive in Malachite Green, No. 1854. This number was chosen as the tooling available to us for the N Class locomotive more accurately portrays No. 1854 then it does No. 1817.

I trust this information is of interest to you,

Kind regards

Richard Proudman

Additionally, you may like to note, Graham Muz has posted:

Unfortunately the Bulleid coaches in the Bachmann Thanet Train Set will be technically incorrect lettered Southern as they are the later BR Built deep window vent batch from 1950 so would never have been lettered Southern. When I queried this with Bachmann the response was that this was for the train set market so there were aware that technically it is incorrect but filled the gap in 'Big four' sets for them.

Hope this info is of use.

Thanks for this post. I can now cross this set off my 'wanted list'. Maybe a second rake of birdcages is on the cards after all !

A certain box-shifter beginning with H is spltting the loco and the coaches from the set.  The loco costs 82 GBP and the two coaches 52 GBP.  As far as I can find out No. 1854 was repainted in malachite in September 1946 and later as 31846 with "BRITISH RAILWAYS" on the tender and the number on the back of the tender as well.  It ran inn this livery until repainted BR lined black in July 1950. No. 1817 was repainted black in May 1949.  The repaintings were done at Asghford, so I assume that these were Eastern Section based locos.

What are the curves included in this set? I'm looking to buy a few things, and want to know if this set ticks enough boxes

- Circuit of track for running locos in (18" radius minimum)

- A southern railway locomotive (DCC or DCC ready at least) suitable for passenger or freight, main or branch line

- Some Southern branded rolling stock

My main modelling interest is American railroads, but as I'm intending to attend the UK modular meet next year I'd like something that's at least moderately appropriate... I can accept that the coaches are not 100% accurate, but is the overall thing a reasonable representation for the money, and will I be able to run in my american engines (which generally require 18" or greater radius curves) on the included track?

Cheers.
