NBL Class 43 Last Days

Someone once told me that they travelled on the last known passenger working for this class. The Swindon Class 42 last days are well documented but when it comes to the Class 43, information is hard to track down. They were all gone by October 3rd 1971 so their disappearance was kind of masked by the fact that the Swindon type was still about. 14 examples are listed as stock on the final day but D834 Pathfinder was laid up in Hackney yard for months as I remember, I suspect only a handful were running through September and the beginning of October. The last to work a passenger service according to my source was on an Exeter to Barnstaple run. Can anyone confirm or deny this? The North British Company were very successful with steam but bowed out with a whimper - no farewells for any of their diesel products.

857 was seemingly Undaunted on 29-9-71:

Allegedly just switched off on October 1st and the last working.

833 failed at Reading on September 22nd and that was probably that:

857 went on to work the 23.25 Paddington to Newton Abbot (1B48) 2/10/71 which was the last move for Undaunted. 834 worked to Marsh Junction 26/9/71 and was not seen in action again. D858 Valorous is the one that seems to have escaped the records. It would be interesting to know if anyone has notes taken at Exeter on either the 3rd or 4th of October 1971.

858 worked the 16.05 Exeter - Barnstaple and 17.55 return on 2 October and then withdrawn the following day. 857 worked 23.25 Paddington - Newton Abbot as stated above, but this was available to passengers as far as Westbury, so this was technically the final passenger working, before withdrawal after arrival at Newton Abbot on 3 October 1971. All from Book of the Warships.

Also 841 ran to Swindon under it's own power on 6 October 1971, and 844 worked at Worcester on carriage heating from late October to 26 November before working to Swindon light engine.

I'm sure I have said this before to Phil and Nidge, how sad and wasteful it seems that these locos that had apparently settled down to give reliable service, were simply and unceremoniously switched off without remark because of some arbitrary doctrine from on high.

Yes I know the railway doesn't run on emotion and sentimentality, but some of these culls (like a good few line closures) bear the hallmarks of jobsworth vindictiveness.  At least 844 kind of briefly escaped the ban.  And it's telling that they retained a London presence until their withdrawal deadline.

861 finished at Worcester then ran light engine Oeo to Bristol... Will look up more details at home tonight

Cheers

Phil

Running OEO would they have effectively been a B-2 or a 2-B?

But presumably BR was able to withdraw the Class 43s because it had more locos than it actually needed, so if the 43s hadn't been withdrawn, something else would have been instead? Given the small size of the class and their much-documented problems, they were always going to be early candidates for the great engine shed in the sky.

These are surely the cold, hard facts as played out whilst the Summer T/T 1971 receded into recent memory.

However, had the survivors been allowed - like the final Westerns - to run themselves out of hours, I wonder if their demise might have generated a bit more of an intrigue - and a following of sorts.,

The last active dates I have are:

Courtesy of Mark Alden:

839 - 8th September, 1B01 TO 85A then 85A - Padd, Padd - Westbury

842 - 20th September, same diagram as 857 below

853 - 23rd September, 5B73 Malago Vale - 85A, 6M20 85A - BNS then LD BNS - Curzon St, 4V03 Curzon St - Bristol

854 - 3rd September, same diagram as 857 below

855 - 17th September 1B01 Padd - 85A, 85A - Padd - 85A, then 7E15 as far as Swindon

857 - 29th September, Padd - 85A - Padd - 85A then 7E15 as far as Swindon

861 - 30th September , as above, failed so LE OEO 85A to 82A

862 - 18th September, 85A - 85B engineers train

And some earlier workings of interest from August...

2 43s in Brum on 20th! 834 worked Malago Vale diagram as per 853 above and 861 worked Paignton - BNS then Washwood Heath - STJ on 7V63

844 - 25th August - LD 85A - 82A

845 - 28th August, Paignton - BNS - Cardiff

And July...

862 - 30th July, Newton Abbott - Newton le Willows motorail as far as Crewe! Returned on Manchester - Penzance as far as Plymouth

From my own records 855 and 862 were in 85A week 19th - 24th September but those were my last sightings

And MIAC records some other workings....http://www.miac.org.uk/class42.html

But my favourite memories have to be...

Strongbow at BNS

Resistance at Bescot

Superb - ex works - first sighting of a 43 for me at 85A

And an evening run back from Padd down the Cotswold line behind 861 in 1970....

Happy days! The workings do not suggest locos on their last legs, confirming that a good few were probably switched off fully operable.

See post 9 in http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/114466-oo-gauge-warship-diesels/ for our efforts to recreate the good times....

I think this issue has been well documented but the fact is by 1970, BR had far more loco's than it actually needed and the as cost cutting measure, diesel hydraulics and their very expensive West German (as it was at the time) made them prime candidates for withdrawal.  The pound at the time was weak against the then West German Mark.  As successful as the hydraulics were, they were hampered by high costs, they were doomed to retired early,  This is not just a BR problem as the Southern Pacific and to a certain extent, Denver & Rio Grande dabbled with diesel hydraulics and they suffered the same fate as the BR's.

As to North British being a very successful company, I think you will find that as subjective as they did have numerous build issues and I think the most documented case as the Australian Class R 4-6-4's which had to be effectively rebuilt when they got there.  The main reason was that the orders for new diesels and that effectively spelled the end for North British, Beyer-Peacock and other, all steam builders.

Looking at it all from a different perspective, Maybach and Voith are now part of Siemens and look how successful they are now, only the 40 years to get it right.

Pulling together various pieces of information. At the beginning of the last week of the Class 43, 9 were potentially in traffic on Monday 27th September 1971. This includes 844 Spartan which was possibly stored at St Phillips Marsh.

During the week 835 Pegasus took 852 from Newton Abbot where it had been withdrawn to Swindon on Wednesday 29th October where they both remained out of service. 855 Triumph also succumbed on Friday 1st of October after working 7B14 23.24 STJ - Totnes then light to Laira where it remained until withdrawal.

6 active 43's entered the final weekend...839 Relentless,854 Tiger and 862 Viking finished activities on Saturday 2nd October with 841 Roebuck, 857 Undaunted and 858 Valorous continuing to Sunday 3rd October/ Monday 4th October As already mentioned there were two last opportunities to ride behind 858 Exeter - Barnstaple - Exeter, and 857 Paddington to Westbury. As far as is known these were the last two passenger workings.

Challenging earlier notings. One interesting point surrounds 841 Roebuck. It worked 1A72 21.00 Pz - Pad on Sunday 3/10/71 as far as Plymouth. It then went light to Newton Abbot (by now the early hours of Monday 4th October) and took 6326 and 6343 0F73 to Swindon possibly laying claim to be the last one out working on the mainline with a passenger train. Whether it took 1A72 single handed to Plymouth is also an unknown at present. It could possibly be the last one to have been put to store depending on arrival time at Swindon with the Class 22's

I have (below) a compiled list of Warship workings and from it I have taken the NBL's so you can see what they got up to in the last week. The numbers in brackets after (25) etc indicate the engine hours accumulated after working that diagram.

For some reason some locos haven't lined up in the document... haven't tabbed for some reason??

I just hope I don't get to read this later in book by a dodgy journalist from Peterborough as 'an exclusive revelation'....

The information I have comes from the loco record cards filled in by the Loco Control as each loco did a train...

Enjoy...

Julian

Maybach became MTU Friedrichshafen, and is now part of Rolls Royce Holdings. Voith is family owned with a tie up with Siemens in just one of its divisions, not the turbo division.

Am new to RMWEB so a bit late with these notes, but thought they may be of interest.

A day at Reading on 6 9 71 [last day of the school holidays] produced:

841,853 and 854. [Also D809 on Malago Vale to Old Oak Common vans].

On 11 9 71,at Ealing Broadway and Southall, 835,841 and 861. [Also 807].

On 18 9 71,while at the GWS/BR Didcot open day,842 and 855, Triumph being the last 43 I saw in service.

A fascinating class, with a great series of names....

Yes, in my opinion the 43s had on the whole better names than the 42s.  By which I mean that there were more which were frankly warlike or historically resonant, as befits a fighting ship, rather than "tame" ones such as names of admirals and types of dog. I particularly relish those exotic ones Temeraire and Ramillies.

Although Roebuck is pretty lame, I'll grant you.

Hey Mark,

Thank you so much for your reply and the info therein.Regarding my day at Reading, I can remember 841 coming in on the down Worcester, and without sounding too soppy, seeing Champion that day is one of my fondest memories of a Warship at work.Into the afternoon that day and the unmistakable front end shape of a Warship came into view from the Bristol direction. It was held at signals{Scours Lane?} for what seemed like ages, and eventually got the road. She took the through line between the main platforms, and although my memory could be playing tricks,I think power was applied as a signal at the East end cleared. Marvellous...

I do have some photo's, taken on an Instamatic I got for Xmas 1971,but I was a mere 12 with no idea about photography,so they're not great.

I was in contact with Martin a couple of years or so back,he was kind enough to supply details of some of my observations as you have done. I did give him a list of all my Warship sightings in 71 and 72,would be happy to do the same for you. I started spotting at Southall in 1968,and although I cant remember why, I started keeping records from 71 to the end of 73,when I packed it in.

As far as railway interest goes,I count myself fortunate to have been born in the era I was,and to have grown up where I did, enabling me to see the majority of the main line hydraulic fleet, these loco's have left a lasting impression. Maybe a view shared by other contributors to this section,,

Excellent information, special thanks to Mark Alden for the detailed accounts of movements in the last week the 43's were in traffic & love the comment "I just hope I don't get to read this later in book by a dodgy journalist from Peterborough as 'an exclusive revelation'...." - Still looking for last date in traffic for D833/D844 & D852 if anyone could help?
