Helston stone traffic

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in creating a small layout of a stone crusher based in Cornwall. In trying to find suitable wagons Helston's stone traffic comes to mind. Unfortunately from the photos I have I've not been able to identify fully what type (diagram) of wagons were used for stone at Helston. Does anyone have any information on this subject as far as diagram numbers and possible wagon numbers?

Many thanks

Ian

Hi Ian, presumably you've got Stanley C Jenkins' "The Helston Branch" pub by Oakwood? There's one or two pictures with hoppers in there but not easy to see much detail.

Hi Richard

Unfortunatelly I've not purchased "The Helston Branch" but have seen many photos on the web of Helston with of the stone wagons in view that have been taken from the bridge so show part of the stone shute and wagons end on. I've seen photos with two types of hoppers in shot at the stone shute but again end on. There must be a photo somewhere of a stone wagon side on.

This possible little project will not be Helston but a fictional location, I'm just enquiring so I could build a few wagons that would have been seen on stone traffic in Cornwall.

Regards

Ian

Looking at the photos in here ( http://www.cornwallrailwaysociety.org.uk/helston-branch.html),at least some of the wagons appear to be former iron-ore hoppers, possibly of ex-LMS origin http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/lmsironorehop ). Initially, I'd thought the wagons shown were the BR 13t hoppers, but a look at PB's site showed these to have three uprights on each size. It's of little import, though, as neither type is available in R-T-R in 4mm scale.

There is one picture that possibly shows a 1/161 but there are also other wagons in the picture that are of a different dia.

I can see that dia 1/161 is a contender. Also possibly dia 1/160. I wonder if I could justify a Dave Bradwell kit of dia 1/142 or 1/144. Shame that no side on views of hopper wagons at Helston has surfaced to confirm types used but many thanks for the replies.

Given that there are so few views to be seen, it would be reasonable to get the wagons you want, they might be wrong or right but it will be very hard for some one to say that it's wrong.

I take your point and as this will be a fictious layout I can play by my own rules but at least you all have given me some good pointers as to what the wagons might have been.

Many thanks

I was tempted to suggest 'rule 1' in my oiginal post but thought it a bit premature before other wiser people than I had made their contribution.

Only trouble is Ian - we all know now they might be wrong! :-)
