Slab loading bay

Recommended Posts

I intend to build at some point a slab loading bay based on the SMACC slab plant at Sheffield , it will have only one line, be about 4ft 6in long and about 14/18 in wide. It will be the inside of the building only with a overhead crane to load the slabs , using a slab tongs. locos will be tinsley class 08 and Judith edge 0-4-0 sentinel, wagons are;

BBA no ends 6 cradles

BBA ends , high stanchions

BMA

BDA

SPA

BVA

BSA ex BBA

IGA cargowaggon flats

Handbuilt internal user slab wagons to add interest.

Here's a link to the type of thing I'd like to do

As we already have the locos and wagons for use on the Avesta Sheffield layout and proposed Great Coates layout , the cost of building this slab layout should be relatively low , 3 - 5 pieces of track Inc fiddle yard, load of plastruct girders, corrugated card for cladding, now like all things I need TIME !

Hi Baz,

Sounds an interesting project.  I was never a fan of these inside a building layouts until I saw the Gauge 1 - Worcester Road layout, which was a similar principal, but just the inside of an engine shed in the hydraulic era - completely changed my view!  Your plan sounds good, something a bit different and interesting.  Are you going for OO gauge?  Dare I ask if your being really adventurous and looking to get the crane working :)

Good luck, i'll be following!

It will be 00 , and yes I will have a working crane , as usual all will be handbuilt , our Avesta Sheffield still needs it crane to unload coil ( will be fully working), again this is only two lines http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/1876/entry-16566-avesta-sheffield/

No time scale yet , but will start to get the plastruct girders this weekend, got the boards , track - which will be inlayed with card from work ,got 4 tinsley class 08 anyway, the BVA wagons I've got 6 sets of bogies and buffers from S Kits just need to have the side frames laser cut , found some drawings online for them and scaled them up , will handbuild some internal users similar to this one

Sounds great. I like your Avesta layout ... totally missed that previously, but that is probably because I don't get on with the blogs system!

Real feeling of Sheffield and industry.

Cheers

The IGA cargowaggon flats were used for trials in 1994/95 , but only ran a few times. BBA with 6 cradles will use the second release of Colin Craig etched cradles, BMA Cambrian kits , BBA Cambrian kits , SPA FTG models, IGA Heljan , BDA Bachmann, BSA Cambrian side frames new floor and bolsters, BVA handbuilt bodies with S Kits bogies and buffers . There was an excellent article in Rail Express( No 102 November 2004) covering the steel traffic from Sheffield, in the article there is reference to the loading bay only allows four wagons at a time , so I will prob limit the model to three ?!...

This might be of interest, it's the stockyard crane at BSC Shepcote Lane, the plant which I believe later became Avesta, Sheffield.

The Great Coates layout is on hold at the moment , started to build the boards at our club , but then had to move out , hoping to get other premises soon , then will carry on, I have most of the stock now, I'll model it in its grassy overgrown state, once I make a start shouldn't take too long, even if it's only the scenic section for now with no fiddle yards. The steel wagons remain virtually the same as the above post , except I'll do 5 BXA ex BAA, always looking for other traffic, wagons etc...

All the steel wagons can be used on Great Coates, Avesta Sheffield and the proposed slab bay project

And so it begins, bought load of plastruct girders today, it's only plastic! but set me back best part of £50!add to that couple of lengths of track, geared motors from kids toy crane £1at boot sale, baseboards will be wood from work, got two packs of corrugated card sheet as boot sale for £1,lights inside Poundland Xmas lights, the concrete base will be layers of thin card from work with various grey/white emulsion paint sponged on randomly. Will have two/three working shutter doors these will be operated with old CD drives from computers ,internal slab wagons handbuilt from Plastruct with HO bogies reclaimed from some American stock from toy fair (think I paid £8 for four)just need to re gauge them

post-19557-0-65887400-1478367850_thumb.jpg

This lot will be the support uprights and girders for the crane to run along, I'll look into placing a threaded bar between two of the I beams with a geared motor on the end, rest of the operating system , well I'll make it up as I go along! So the layout should not cost more than £100 or so , buying all the plastruct sounds alot but put into context the whole project is about the same as buying one sound chip or a Bachmann loco !

You've inspired me to build , as not done much modelling lately , could be enough for two ? As there's no points the basic layout shouldn't take long , just the crane and slab tongs will take the time. The other possibility is to use an electro magnet to pick the slab up.

Hope wcyrail gone OK , seen some pics on tinternet looks great , probably star of the show.
