Wavertree Diesel Depot

Oh no not another depot layout and oh no not another layout thread that never happens and is just a dream...

 

Well the first sentence is right, as for the second who knows.

 

I've always fancied a MPD, in fact my first layout was a depot but halfway through to much needed to be done to motorise all the points and although I'd been planning the track plan for about a year with research etc I just wasn't happy with it.

 

So fast forward five years, a couple of scrapped and started layouts and the urge to build more of my own track and those depot urges are still there, mainly due to the fact I've got a few locos, hardly any stock and not much space (but let's not worry about that last one ) and I think I've actually settled on a track plan I'm happy with and looks realist, I think, hopefully!!

 

Now this might all just be a pipe dream as I've got one layout on hold and a small one about to get built but I wanted thoughts on the track plan and if I can I want to start making buildings, the thought behind this is that if I can build the shed at least I've got something to take photos of my locos on/in.

 

So now to business and the depot, based somewhere around the Gridiron Edgehill in Liverpool, will be mid 60's as usual with me with green an blue Diesels, there will be a slightly lower level to which will see the rear end of a stabling point, this will have a line leading up to the fuelling point head shunt, the lower level will have the knitting up so I can use AC electrics inspired by these pics.

This will allow me to dabble in ohle without getting to complicated. It'll be EM gauge with all hand built track and it'll probably never get finished

 

As for size I haven't a clue, I'm just going with the flow, a few of us have 'layouts of a lifetime' so this might be mine.

 

Anyway here's the plan which took me five years in the making.

 

 

I had a spare few minutes before so the flexi came out.

 

The fuelling dispensing road to the far left and the stores siding next to the shed.

 

 

 

View of the shed with another short road to the right this will have a small fuelling point to.

 

 

There will be another two possibly 3 holding sidings to the right.

 

 

 

The card used for the shed just happens to be around the the right size for a 4 road shed 2 locos in length, not sure if I'll lengthen this so its 3 locos in length.

 

 

So this isn't going to be done over a month or two, it's going to be a long project that might see buildings etc built before any sleepers are laid but I thought I'd start a thread just to get thoughts and ideas.

What's the shed building going to be like the only one Ive seen in flesh around your way is Wigan spring branch and that's a beauty when it had the old shed next to the new build

Cheers bri I'll probably model it on the same style as Allerton or Crewe just a bit smaller, I've got quite a few books on early diesel depots but the southern ones where a bit different apparently.

Well I think you should go for it!!

 

I agree that its something that is right up your street and a great way to photograph your locos and weathering skills.

 

It reminds me of Edge Hill in its last days, a special place in my heart.

Nice idea Paul, as said above, a good showcase for your weathering skills and as it's a depot you don't need that much room to make it interesting, and play trains.

Your ballast looks a bit ropey Paul, and I'm not sure about the knobbly knees entrant, but here's a pic of Edge Hill in our/your period.

Thanks fellas, I'm still fiddling with ideas to the track plan but it's definitely something I'm going to start but I'm not in any rush as Dyffryn is the main priority as that gives me the quickest chance of getting to run something

 

I'll post my ideas as soon as I do decent sketches, I've also been trying to find an exact area around Edgehill that I could fit it into but for the moment it'll just be based around there somewhere.

I'm going to take a closer look at the old Edgehill shed track plan to see how it could be converted to a diesel depot just out of interest.

Thanks mate, I'm happy with the track plan for the shed area and the fuelling roads but it's the surroundings and whether to have other sidings I'm struggling with. Do I have sidings slightly higher or the depot area higher and lower sidings?

Great pics cheers mate, that's one of the thoughts I've had with the electrified lines on the lower level, but I don't want to much raikway either as I always like to go with that less in more thought.

They're on the line into Liverpool on the approach to Edgehill and Downhill carriage sidings, I'm doing a few doodles work permitting this afternoon.

A bit later than expected but he's one of the sketches I've come up with. I'm happy with the depot area so that remains unchanged, it's just the approaches, with the lines near the bottom wired to stable ac locos.

 

Alm the track area on the approach would be raised with houses etc backing onto the embankment.

 

Possibly not the best drawing for 5 in the morning.

Like the idea of the bridges ,just one quiry,would the two sidings have been extended across a bridge I'd have thought they'd have stopped short next to the houses save on building another bridge .but rule one applys and it would look good with all the tracks going across

Sorry, that's the only one I've got.

Cue violins playing in the background,,,,,,film was relatively expensive back in the day, wages were low, and money tended to go on the spotting trip itself. You've never had it so good!

As the depot is new and built on the site of old sidings those lines would of extended further to serve something

 

Thanks Grimley, that's the kind of look I'm going for, they might be slightly lower than the other lines to but not by scale ft or two.

 

No worries Mike, as for having it so good, every phones got a camera and Digital cameras are pretty cheap, but there's nothing to take photos of, I wouldn't waste the effort getting out of bed for one of today's modern units etc. Suppose we'll just have to take photos of our models

 

Keith, I've thought how I might fit it in but I don't think it's possible, until Dyffryn is finished, elj might be mothballed as I'll be concentrating on that and making buildings and the shed for this I think.

If your building it for Operational interest  , have a think about era and whether it was a depot with fuel point or a stabling point (for train crew) . 

If its the later probably won't have fuel as that requires a fitter .

 

So your locos need to run LD to Allerton for fuel or coupled up to x5 for a trip to Allerton .

 

Speke Junction (steam) became Garston SP and we had to trip diesel locos back and forth to Allerton for fuel or service check ,etc .

 

If Edge Hill remained open in diesel days  , lots of crew to trip up and down to Lime Street for there work and don't want to loose all that lost "travelling time"  , maybe gives you an excuse for an old DMU and short train crew platform (like Longsight) to get them up and down to Lime Street , just a thought

That's great cheers mate, I've been thinking about this thread for a day or two now as I'm thinking of building at least acsrsbling point for now but it will definitely be in 7mm as I've now sold most my 4mm fleet. I've got other plans in 7mm but the fact remains I can't not do something in Liverpool in the mid 60's. although I've only decided on 1/4 of what I want and haven't a clue about the rest so for now there will be at least two lots of stabling roads a two and a three.
