RMweb Premium Nile Posted November 11, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 11, 2016 For the 2017 Challenge the theme is ‘The Halt’, a small, wayside stop alongside a single, narrow gauge track. No loop, no sidings, just a single line of rails. The model is to be a diorama and is not required to operate. Full details can be found here: http://expong.org/dave-brewer-challenge Expo Narrow Gauge 2017 will be on Saturday 28th October 2017 ~ 10:00am to 5:00pm
rue_d_etropal
It does not sound very challenging, until you try to think of something to put in the space. Small wayside stops on narrow gauge were often pretty sparse affairs.
BG John
Maybe that's what makes it so challenging. I think the standard of modelling has got to be incredibly high to compensate for the simplicity, and a lot of creativity used in the design. RMweb Premium Nile Posted November 12, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 12, 2016 Creativity is the key. If you look at previous entries you'll see how people have taken simple ideas and produced a great variety of models.
BG John
Plan A was too big. Coming up with Plan B is proving much more challenging! I probably won't be able to get to ExpoNG to actually enter, but I think it's a great challenge to do anyway. It's ideal to work on during the winter, while the railway room is cold, as I can put it on my desk in my cosy office/modelling room. I'd like to use it to practice various skills I need for my other layouts
RMweb Premium Nile Posted November 13, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 13, 2016 You could post the entry if you can't make it to ExpoNG,, it's happened before.
BG John
I suppose that's a possibility. 2ft x 1ft isn't that big. Anyway, it's the experience of building it that's most important, and succeeding at that is a bigger prize than the slight chance of winning a competition! Plan B is looking good so far, but it hasn't escaped from a computer screen yet!
rue_d_etropal
looking at the details and measurments carefully, I think I have come up with one crazy idea, and how to transport it. won't say more , plenty of time.
rue_d_etropal
Unfortunately I could not get to Swanley easily, so plan was shelved. Noticed the chalenge for 2018has been announced. Odd no-one has mentioned it yet as it looks far more interesting.
