Last night we turned our attentions to the other (first/LH) board.

The reason this one isn't fully assembled yet is because we wanted to finalise the size etc for our Traverser, but only after looking at it in real life size and talking over the sizes between the group.

We made sure there was no faults by laying down the track plan down for this board. We then discussed distances and sizes in relation to different parts on the board for a suitable outcome. We have decided that there was no problems with our plan, however have come to the conclusion that we would like a little more space in the traverser area. Having more than enough space between the front two sidings, we decided we could use some of this space by bringing the siding nearest to the traverser further towards the front to make best of the space we have including future scenic works and buildings we aim to use. So we have decided this is a good enhancement for us and the layout. Steve is going back to drawing board on his CAD software this week to tweak the design to allow more width for the traverser and adjust the entrance to the two front sidings for this board to create the extra space for the aforementioned.

Here is a few images of some of my newly acquired intermodal stock (not for EASTGATE!!!) and a FL class 66, along with Daniel's class 20 and railtrack wagons. We used these to give us a better representation for workings and movement in the sidings and traverser.

Looking nice, a definite follow!

How long are the platforms and how many units does it fit?

(I assume the whole 4 car class 350 fits on?)

The platforms are long enough for a Class 150 or Class 350 in a 4 car formation or a Class 158 or Class 170 in a 3 car formation. I hope this helps.

To add to the above, this was how the design for the layout was based around. Although we are looking to add removable extensions to the traverser and platform ends to utilise additional sized passenger train. This is just at discussion stage at this point but we are planning ahead incase we have the desire to squeeze a slightly longer train.

Hi all,

Another small update from Friday's meeting.

Painting was started on board number 2 on Friday and was carried out by Andreas and John. They did a great job. That was left to dry over the weekend and hopefully we will get a few pictures of that up soon.

The construction for board number 1 is also coming along well with the under frame now in place and Steve W has undertaken the adjustments to the track plan mentioned last week on his CAD program.

The reason board 2 is ahead of number 1 is due to the fact we wanted to get the traverser cut out exactly how we needed and precisely done to give us the best possible use of it in the future of the build. Steve W will be cutting the traverser area of board 1 this week and we will then see some more progress on that within the next couple of weeks, hopefully bringing it into line with board number 1.

This was made possible by the agreed decision of the revised track plan and spacing by the team.

Here is the construction for board 1:

Hi all,

Brief update from last night. The traverser is progressing well on board 1 and starting to take shape. All just alignments and final adjustments being made now. We have a work day today (although I cannot attend) so the rest of the team will be progressing with this and may have some more photos from today which will be up soon.

For now here is Steve W and Andres going over alignments on board 1 at the point where the tracks go from the traverser onto the main board.

Hi All,

We had a workday last Saturday (25th February) and we made some good progress on both baseboards. Here is some photos showing the current state of both boards. Board 1 is nearly complete following strengthening and all board 2 now needs is painting on the underside.

More updates soon!

Last Friday we had a lengthy running session on Northwick, with an 'Eastgate stock' theme.

My brand new class 68 had its first journey amongst others. Here is a few pics of it TnT with a 37's on a Network Rail ballast train. A full video will be up shortly.

For anyone who is interested:

The Eastgate group will have a static display of board 1 (traverser board) at an exciting event TDMRC are putting on in the heart of Twickenham on March 25th (NEXT SAT!) at Twickenham Library, Garfield Road, Twickenham TW1 3JT.

It's a FREE pop-up style model railways show (with two working layouts) designed to take our hobby to a new audience.

If you want to meet the Eastgate team as well as get to know the club better or just meet some of our members this is a great opprtunity to talk about the layout - and sign up to join us!

It's been a lovely sunny day - ideal for gardening - and finally planting the traverser into the baseboard, levelling it and adding some strengthening. To clear the traverser table supports we had to cut away a bit of the thin ply stiffening weakening these pieces which was compounded by the large 'lightening' holes in them. Retrospectively we should have ordered the boards without holes. A couple of rollers from Station Rd. Baseboards as a central support completed the task. Club tonight so we are now ready to put down some underlay and then track laying can commence.

Yes - I would recommend them! They are easy to assemble and great to knock up a layout quickly. I am even considering using them on my home layout!

I hope this helps.

Cheers! Thanks for the link it's really useful, I'll have look at what is available.

As Andres says above, the assembly is straightforward. These are their cheaper range but have made into two decent boards. We had to add extra stiffening to the second board, simply because we chopped away quite a lot of the original ply to get the traverser fitted. The other followed the good and relevant instructions that come with the boards (including glue, screws and pins). Three points to watch: The only fixing holes not pre-drilled are in the upper edge of the sides and ends for the top. If you use their top it comes pre-drilled and can be used to pilot drill the top edges of the frame. This is essential to prevent the ply splitting when the screws are inserted. Be careful when handling the long centre spline, don't let it bend as with the holes for wiring and slots cut for the cross pieces it is quite weak until it has been installed and check the squareness of the frame when screwing on the top.

Overall they saved a lot of time and resulted in a better, lighter board than we could have achieved with a 8x 4 sheet of plywood. Well pleased.

So both boards are now finished in a contraction aspect. So track laying is now starting! We started to solder our first joints on to the track work last week with work continuing tomorrow. We are going about all the soldering first before actually laying the track to save ourselves the job later when the track is down and it is harder to do.

Heres a few images of some of our stock suitable for use on Eastgate, positioned on the new traverser fully in situ and all finished! :)

Hi all,

Progress is steaming ahead (no pun intended!)...

Soldering the wire to the track work continues and there has been a significant milestone reached.

Last night, Steve W has also helping some of the young members of the 'Eastgate' at soldering readying there skills for taking on some of the work for the rest of the track work coming up....

But the big news of the week is the first bit of track work has been laid!!! It is on board 1 and is one of the main points on the station throat.

Hi all,

Over the last week the Eastgate team have been hard at work. More track work has gone down and the baseboard joint as been levelled out and has now got a smooth joint. The foam layers have now been glued down on the traverser, the front area in front of the traverser and on half of the station end board, this being in addition to what was already down for the track immediately coming off the traverser / fiddle yard area on the the main board and up to the baseboard joint already shown in the last update (see above).

More soldering has been completed and we have officially started the 'wiring' process. Chris, one of the younger members of the Eastgate team has really to stuck in with the soldering and can be seen in one of the pictures below.

We then tested out a VGA wagon across the board joint to see how smooth it was in preparation for cutting the adjoining tack and adding in the copper clad sleepers. We also started to do some measurements and laid out a few of the other pieces of point work.

Progress is coming on well and hopefully we can have all of our track down soon :)

During the previous work we added a track to the fiddle yard - then got on with setting out the points at the board joint. Unfortunately it messed up the alignment of the yard lead track so a bit of time has been spent on the drawing, during which time the short proposed right hand extension became a necessity - strange that. Anyway, a revised drawing giving a  much better alignment and flow of tracks means we are now back on course with track laying this Friday. Revised plan (below)

Work continues on Eastgate as we are still perfecting all the track over the baseboard joint.

Soldering the copper clad sleepers in place and testing track widths, heights and alignment are all factors making this stage fairly cumbersome, but we are also getting the younger modellers involved as well...

Just the one picture from last nights work.

Just to let everyone know that you can see progress on EASTGATE for yourself at Twickenham MRC's Open Day on July 22nd.

At last year's Open Day we were appealing for new members to enable us to start a D&E layout - this year you can see the results (so far!)
