BRM February 2017

Feb edition just landed through by letter box, after taking up the subscription at Warley. Looks a good one this month, with layout Fenchurch ST Peter , which was at Warley, a good slice of green diesels in East Anglia. Also 2 other layouts, Freshwater, a SR Isle of Wight based layout ,and  Burshaw North Western a 2mm Blue Diesel/Electric layout. Plus other good articles and a review of Warley announcements etc. A very good good issue on first glance. Fenchurch St Peter features on the DVD too.

Thanks for the info, I enjoyed the article on Fenchurch St Mary when it was in the Modeller, hopefully this has a different angle on the subject.

I suppose it was published a bit early ahead of any holidays but February issue already? Haven't even got past Christmas yet....!

February issue of BRM dropped through the letterbox this morning which contains a article and photographs of Stafford Railway Circle EM layout Freshwater.

Freshwater layout and all his stock had been donated to the the club by the late SRC member Fred Shilton.

Over the past couple of years extensive research and work has been carried by various SRC members.

It appeared at its first exhibition at our own Stafford in February 2016

It's next appearance being at the BRM Doncaster exhibition in February 2017

I would like to thank the SRC members for all the hard work and to Andy York for such superb photographs.

My BRM arrived while I was on a 'Pressie & Card Distribution' trip around the counties of England, most unexpected but welcome nonetheless.

However, I can't help thinking that 'The Insider' has got the wrong end of the stick when he comments on the Rapido/Locomotion APT -E model.

OK, I know I'm biased, having been involved with the technical side of the model, but I don't think he understands the way this model was sold. His main gripe is about 'Limited Edition' models in general, with which I concur, but the APT-E model wasn't a 'Limited Edition', it was a 'Built to Order' model, a very different thing altogether. There was no intention of profiting from the kudos of it being 'Limited Edition', Jason was was only going to make enough to cover the pre-orders.

As it happens approx, 2000 of them were made, but of course some of them appeared on ebay almost immediately, the sellers apparently never intending to run them, but only to gain from their manifest rarity. It would seem that 'Insider' bought one of these, otherwise he would have had to have pre-ordered one from Locomotion Models an would have known exactly what it was all about.

I dunno. This is  a general comment and not aimed at BRM. I am fed up wih the news "media" speculating rather than reporting. I see this more and more in the model press with CAD's and CAM's etc, and with a prototype that could be kit or scratch built. We know what the model should look like! I appreciate that it gives us the chance to point out errors in advance but this shouldn't be necessary, and I'd prefer the manufacturers to do their research properly.

I can't grasp this one (seeing as it's landed in a BRM mag topic despite the general qualification). I've checked this month's 'Good Inward' news pages and each news piece contains the words 'Has, have or was' denoting that it is reporting the fact that something has been announced or shown.

Is there anything which qualifies the 'speculating' comment?

Every year just before the Christmas break I used to keep a sharp eye out for the new mags which tended to arrive just before Christmas and thus made good reading over the holiday.  This year I though that pleasure was being denied when virtually all arrived earlier in December - but lo & behold the old pleasure was renewed when the February edition of BRM landed on the doormat yesterday.

A clever return to the old tradition of railway modelling mags but seemingly a wish to get the coming year underway sooner than ever and almost on a par with our local Tesco yesterday where they'd sold out of own brand mince pies but were doing a rather nice line in Hot Cross Buns.

Not a happy bunny more like a grinch , Pocket mags showing January issue only .  I thought the same program was used for print issue layout and digital version , the only upside was that you got free items with print and not digital issues . Rant emoji button needed

The print issue has been sent out early to subscribers (because of the Christmas break) ahead of the date that the next digital edition would go live.

Got my Feb 17 subscription copy through the letterbox the other day but only just had chance today post xmas rush to have a browse. Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum and I have missed it, but surely one of the items worth a mention is the Editor leaving the mag? Ben Jones has brought about some serious change (the majority of it for the better) so I wonder where the mag will go from here. I however (maybe mostly alone) was not a big fan on the white space layout of recent times, I think maybe the Hornby mag has the best overall presentation, Railway Modeller is pretty good too TBH.

Does anyone know where Ben is off to out of curiosity?

Has he left already? I might chance a digital sub again. Didn't care for BJ's editorial direction or his cloning of BRM into MR. If I'd wanted to sub to MR I would have. HM is still head and shoulders the best. Hopefully BRM can transform back to a sub being worthwhile again.

I don't mean to be argumentative but just to remind you that there will be as many different opinions on this as there are readers.

My opinion just happens to be the absolute opposite to yours. I regard current BRM as, by a huge margin, the best of the big-4 mags and the only one I actually subscribe to. I most certainly hope it will not change.

So we are all different. It's as well there are still choices to suit us all.

I don't consider your expressing a differing perspective of subjective taste in a mature manner in any way argumentative. I was aware that others' opinon might differ from my own, which is why I presented my own as only that. And it really was a question, if additionally stating the reason why I asked it motivating you to respond to deny my criticism 'air' and validity if possible. It was only a question, and my expressed hope.

Did you ever sub to MR? Or BRM before BJ jumped ship from MR to BRM?

Curiosity question really, as I quite liked BRM before that, detested MR. Had subs to all three at one time. Still sub to HM. Guess we'll see. If they drop the sub promo price some more, I might just be tempted to risk the potential disappointment of a momentary lapse of judgement which might end up relegated the digital dustbin unread...or not.

All budget triage really. A gamble vs certainty. The cost of a sub would buy me several Kindle Ed. non fiction titles on my want list instead. e.g. The final book of Bruce Gamble's Rabaul battles trilogy "Target Rabaul", "Japanese Naval Air Force Fighter Units and their Aces 1932-1945", Parshall and Tull's "Shattered Sword" plus several others. Weighing it up, all of those I would read.

I think Kiwi is right with the number of opinions as readers. I think each mag has its good and bad points, none are perfect. Indeed I (with my dad) actually sub to 4 different titles (but looking to review that) because I dont think any title is perfect and each has its own merits . If MR wasn't so cheap compared to the others that would be No1 to go. It's claimed that BRM had its most successful year in 2016, I assume with that it means copies sold (so must be doing something right).

With regards to Ben Jones I assume the lack of comment means its not widely known where he is off to. Might not be a modelling title of course.

No secrets; Ben's going to be working freelance and writing for several publications. I'm sure there will still be some articles in BRM from Ben when he gets chance!

Being a lifelong "magazine addict", since taking up railway modelling a little over a year ago, I've naturally tried all the titles, and subscribed to a couple. I have to say, my first taste of BRM with the previous issue was very,er, tasty?   Anyway, on the grounds of space limitations (more room for railway = less room to stash magazines) I've taken up the digital version, a great deal currently being offered. However, having paid my dues at Pocketmags, I failed to register what was said on sign-up about getting my streamed DVD content. My February issue is downloaded and waiting for when I finish the Jan issue, but I could do with a pointer as to where I get the stream. Happy New Year all.
