RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted January 25, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 25, 2017 (edited) Could someone with a Heljan 7mm Hymek please measure up the front marker lights for me, looking for overall diameter not including the flat top bit of the base and the diameter of the flip up bit would be nice too. Going to make a master to possibly cast some in resin for my Triang Big Big conversion TIA Ian Edited January 9, 2023 by RedgateModels
peter220950
Hi Ian, Attached is a pic of the main dimensions from the Heljan Hymek, The overall width is 4.4mm, and the height 4.64mm, the hinge is 3.01mm wide. The lamp is 3.50mm diameter and the taper starts at 3.00mm, tapering down to the 2mm tower LED opening. Hope this helps, if you give it a day or two I will see if I can get a mould from the actual loco, it would be easier in the long run if it can be done. RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted January 26, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2017 many thanks for the kind offer Peter Good point Norman, already on this with someone who volunteers on the WSR, however I think Peter's solution will be the best if it works out
peter220950
The best way would undoubtedly be a full sized one, measured, then 3D printed, because as I have now discovered they are tiny! Early indications are promising, a piece of tube was glued to a lolly stick as formwork, This was then clamped to the buffer beam, and sealed down with Vaseline And filled with RTV rubber Making a small mould Which was then filled with a spot of resin That gives something like the desired item. I have a suspicion that they are handed, to counteract the curve of the front, so I will have a bash at the other side tomorrow, and try to figure out how to drill them out, they are so small I can hardly see them to clean them up! RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted January 28, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 28, 2017 and don't worry about drilling them, I can do that when I fit the LEDs
peter220950
Yes, I having made a couple more yesterday I think fixing them, then drilling is likely to be the best option anyway, as they are too small and thin to be able to hold them in a satisfactory manner. As I mentioned they are handed, and also have a top to bottom slope as well, to compensate for the slope on the front of the cab. A further complication I hadn't bargained for is the setting time for the resin, which normally goes off within a few minutes. Presumably because there's only a tiny spot involved there's no heat being generated as in the normal sized casts, and it's taking anything up to a couple of hours to go off, while the surplus mix has hardened in minutes. I now have the right hand sides done, but we're away from home until Wednesday, when I hope to get the left hand ones moulded and cast, so apologies if it's holding things up, they should be with you by the weekend. RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted February 9, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 9, 2017 (edited) Quick update: here's Peter's excellent castings all fitted and drilled to take 2mm "lighthouse" leds Now to mask off that warning panel, how I'm going to do the curved tops is beyond me at the moment ... RMweb Premium 21C123 Posted July 25, 2018 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 25, 2018 Hi all I have recently bought a secondhand o gauge hymek, but it doesn’t have the instructions or head code sheet with it. Does anyone have a copy of either or both they could scan for me please ? I’m wanting to dismantle the bogies as there is at least one with a split gear, it’s making a thump as it moves along. Thanks Roger
