RMweb Gold The Pilotman Posted February 1, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 1, 2017 As the title says, did Peaks ever get to Carne Point, or were they too heavy? I've seen photos of them on trains bound for Carne Point but never beyond Lostwithiel. I know it wasn't restricted to Class 37s back in the 80s as I've also seen photos of a 47 and a couple of 50s on the branch. Are there any photos out there of a Peak? Rivercider
I can not find an entry for Lostwithiel to Carne Point/Fowey in my old freight train load books, which would have confirmed class 45/46 were permitted. However here is 45028 passing Golant in 1977, so yes is the answer, https://www.flickr.com/photos/25025911@N08/16105745049/in/photolist-fKEg5X-nLSfmN-nuqcXH-oMwk4d-8GmsDg-2sGoj2-qxd9Tt-Hw4EU4-qJujUx-e5z1pk-dgtzbr-dh9Vmm-dzGD4w-daWxXi-8L1uDg-dosF5p-d1uB9q-eDwDMi-qxezKi-awnf82-owRX5P-awpF3m-awpVzd-dsvFxt-oMvKML-dfpQ3s-dtSCrM-dsvHpg-dtYdF1-dtSD18-dtYdod-bHCoD8-7Q4m3i-3Ldunx-EcGKcg-oeiKw1-3LdssH-3LhRUQ-3LhNTS-BYX7h-ovwtHg-ow4rFm-xWdK2k-yDM9sz-KRNjiU-x5WHwY-o4yCKQ-e8fj4i-3LdufM-3nHbui edit I have just found the local loads pages w.e.f. from May 1987 Class 45 locos were permitted to haul 1255 tonnes (including loco) in each direction over the branch, if there is an entry in the loads book, then the loco is permitted over the route, cheers
Horizontal
Most definitely the 46s - I signalled several 46s down there in the 80s -'Don't remember any 45s though! :-)

Interesting that there was still such an entry in 1987; I thought that 45s were banned west of Bristol from 1985 onwards.

I suspect in the case of the Freight Train loads book it was probably an oversight that the pages were not updated to remove the class 45 entries. I think that the 'ban' on class 45s west of Bristol was more like no regular diagrammed work west of Bristol, class 45 traction knowledge would then start to lapse for drivers in the west, but Bristol men would still know them. I have a photo somewhere of 45062 passing Flax Bourton on a ballast train in November 1986, here is another one in the west after the 'ban' https://www.flickr.com/photos/d1059/11499032136/in/photolist-c9M3VG-a8WvZg-a8WvZ8-9HWR6o-EkjAtb-a8gPhP-a8gPhT-7Ja5EN-aUUXfF-h5u88e-BA6E7s-iw8xCL-k8GKcm-92Q9gb-9HQbto-dY1rkj-myFFq7-Dm5TGW-rTbqFM cheers

We had loads for various locos over a number of branches and there was of course the exceedingly ambiguous version of the RA book to guide us about what wasn't allowed anywhere. So when we got some tank cars off the road at Cranmore someone in the DMO at Bristol was happy to point out that the loco - whatever it was - hadn't been cleared to Cranmore. But as I pointed out we had a load for it in the Loads Book and the RA book didn't say it was 'Not tested' or 'Not Permitted' - so that ended that debate.
