35018 British India Line returns

I have been reading the article about the return to steam of 35018 British India line at Carnforth under the West coast railway banner.

As a fan of all things southern, and Mr Bullieds steam loco's I must admit that the pictures of this loco in the latest heritage railway magazine are great. I have only ever seen Bullieds in shades of green, 35018 standing in black looks stunning.

I sincerely hope its released fully lined out in BR Black.

Well done to all concerned bringing back this beauty of a ocoo from the deplorable condition it was in when they received it.

I know that paint shades cause a lot of heated debate, I am not after an argument, just acknowledging a job well done and that, in my opinion it looks lovely in black.

If it is black it will be an interesting change from green, although I have to say I loved the sight of 34027 when it was painted in BR maroon for the commencement of the Harry Potter story. As an aside I once saw a print of a painting featuring four express passenger steam locos lined up outside a shed, all painted BR maroon. I think they were possibly a duchess, a King or Castle, a Bulleid pacific and maybe an A3 or A4. Anyone else recall this ?

Back to 35018, perhaps there is black paint left over from 45699 ?

I hadn't realised they had ever appeared in BR Black, always assumed their appearance in the 1960s was down to dirt.

they never did appear in black, this is a first, so I believe

They never appeared in Express passenger Blue in their rebuilt form either, but that didn't stop someone painting a rebuilt blue in preservation.

It will annoy the purists, but done right, lined black is an attractive look.

I reckon it would look good in unlined black with a sunshine SOUTHERN on the tender and it's original number (21C18?) And the SR circle thing on the smokebox door.

Then go a step further and paint the smokebox silver, fit number boards and a dirty great headlight and wait for the explosion.

Would suit a rebuilt MN, though. The wheels and general lines of them are not hugely typical of British trains.

35018 made it's debut on a passenger train on Saturday morning, a charter from Carnforth to York and return, it appears to have been on the receiving end of a green paint brush.  The return working was supposed to be being double-headed by Galatea & British India Line but I understand that 35018 was failed at York with mechanical issues and 45699 worked the return alone.  Hopefully it's nothing more than teething troubles and it's back in service shortly.

35018 passing through Shipley, 30th September 2017.
