Way back in the mists of time, when RMWeb was young, I embarked on building a layout which was to consist mainly of roadways with a token railway to provide an excuse. The first section appeared as a work in progress at the the first RMWeb members' day back in July 2008.

Sadly, for various reasons the project stalled and much of it has lain undisturbed in various boxes.

Recently whilst trying to sort out the large quantity of clutter that has accumulated I dicovered just how much stuff I still had and felt that it was time to revisit the idea.

The concept is for a townscape, set in the West Midlands in the mid-70s, with a reasonable amount of moving road traffic along with that token railway.

The first stage was to create a small test track, dust off a stock Faller Car System vehicle and give it a spin.

The truck in the video had been squirreled away to use to convert something a bit more British in style.

So it had to be trimmed a bit.

I got this far and the light of realisation dawned. The intended recipient, an EFE Bedford TK, could use a different arrangement as the motorised chassis was ideally suited for something a bit more adventurous.

Yes, it seems a good idea. Chopping up starter sets does leave you with a large number of chargers.

Mind you, there are other ways - it's only because I had it in stock that I started from here.

Later this year Faller will be releasing the lorry chassis without bodywork as item number 161470 http://www.faller.de/App/WebObjects/XSeMIPS.woa/cms/page/pid.14.17.109/agid.1139/atid.14972/ecm.at/Car-System-Conversion-chassis.html
and as a variable size kit 163703 http://www.faller.de/App/WebObjects/XSeMIPS.woa/cms/page/pid.14.17.109/agid.1139/atid.14976/ecm.at/Car-System-Chassis-kit.html.
UK retail price is currently set at  £81 and £67 respectively.

I'm sure I still have "Worktown" squirrelled away in the loft somewhere. Must dig it out sometime....

It would be nice to see it again Jon.

The best laid plans of mice and men...

The trailer chassis is metal and the idea was to drill a hole in it that would drop over the motor mounting on the cab unit. I started with a small hole and then used a bigger bit which got me to an 8mm diameter hole. Then I broke out the 18mm drill bit and it chewed up the chassis. Experimentation after the event  :scratchhead:  shows that it destroys thin materials, it needs a reasonable thickness to bite into.

So after trying to straighten the chassis I gave up and snapped the front away, removed part of the twisted metal and had a think.

Then I broke some 60 thou plastic card out of the strategic stores and cut a hole with a compass cutter. The plastic card now needs cutting to length and some more metal must be cut away from the chassis but you can now see how the cab and trailer will be articulated.

Yep, that'll work...

Fiddly-R-Us.

Fitting the rear lights and trafficators is a trying task. The painted lights were filed down to give a flatish metal surface (the number plate took a strike from a stray file stroke - that will need to be reinstated later) and then 0402 SMD LEDs are glued in place.

Yep, that's an LED on the Blu-Tack by the point of the knife blade. The enamelled copper wires that are attached to it are about the same thickness as a human hair and the whole lot is bloomin' awkward to handle.

Once the initial glob of glue has dried I covered the LED with a coat of epoxy resin to try and ensure that it can't get knocked off by accident.

Greetings Mr M. I trust this finds you and yours well.

I can't believe for a second you had a 'stalled' project.

What sort of a modeller are you?!?

Regards,

You know perfectly well what sort of modeller I am!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

Take two 3mm white LEDs that have been in a fight with a file, add a splosh of black paint then insert in the pre-drilled holes.
