The online campus magazine of TU Braunschweig, which is the university of technology at Braunschweig, Germany, just published an interview on my 'virtual railway worlds' (in German):https://magazin.tu-braunschweig.de/m-post/virtuelle-eisenbahnwelten/

You might be interested in this project too done by Rob Mackinnon at Aberystwyth University,

I recognised the photo, and a reference to TT gauge I think. If so, then it is what inspired me to try a different approach to boxfile layouts.

Anyway,I wonder why we get singled out as different, when partaking in any creative hobby is done for very similar reasons. Ask a group of artists why they do it, and I think the answer might seem straightforward(money?), but it is more complex and no different to why we actually build model railways. I am leaving out all those who either just collect, or just put together a selection of ready built items, although this maybe of more interest to anyone studying the pschology of those involved.

Ask why those who build models using Lego, and it will highlight similar reasons.

Being creative is what is in our nature. We all do it in different ways, but there are some people who seem to prefer to be negative, so will pick on activities such as model railways, to publicise their negative attitude to life.

My German is non existent, but I am sure I could put it through a translator and get a rough idea.It actually translates OK, as far as I can tell.

I would like to think that this type of research was done as part of something which covered all creative activities, otherwise we are being singled out again, Phycology reseach now usually involve working with other resech departments which use equipment like brain scanners. Much is being done about the positive effect of music, so would expect to see other creative activities to be studied fully.

I didn't even get a chance to try out my German. The Android Chrome browser just did it!

A very interesting article.

I don't think it will be long before we don't need to learn more than one language as computer translators are getting better.

Talk into a machine(mobile phone) the software converts into simple text, which is transmitted, picked up my another device, and converted back to speech.  Not that people won't want to learn different languages, partly because language can have an efect on the way we think.

This is probably because we do not fit to the mainstream of railway modelling. For many people, what we do is simply too strange, too far away from what they think railway modellig is about.

I am leaving out all those who either just collect, or just put together a selection of ready built items, although this maybe of more interest to anyone studying the pschology of those involved.

Some time ago, I met a colleage who was known for his interest in model railways. After being introduced, I said that I'm also a railway modeller.

His very first question was: "How many locomotives do you own?"

I said: "Just a handful."

He said, with a lot of proud in his voice: "I have more than 200!"

I said: "I build models and make dioramas."

He immediately lost any interest in talking to me. These pure collectors are a completely different breed. They do not even understand what we do and why we are doing it.

On the other hand, when talking with creative people, e.g., artists, photographers, media people, etc., there is always a lot of interest for my kind of modelling.

Even if they have no connection to the railway subject, they find the creatity behind my modelling inspiring. I feel the same for art and other creative hobbies.
