Bachmann Class 47 8 pin v 21 pin version

Hi everyone,

 

As my name suggests I am a big fan of the Class 47.   I own countless Bachmann Class 47's, but they are all 21 pin versions.

 

However I was looking at the older 8 pin versions, on ebay, gumtree etc.    Can anyone tell me what are the differences between the two versions?

 

Was there a re-tooled body put on the 21 pin?, as it looks identical to the 8 pin version.   Or was it just a reworking of the electrics that make the loco work?

 

Any help is most appreciated.

From what I remember. The earlier 47s were taken in part from the class 57 mouldings. This resulted in there being raised dots around the cab windows. The 57 has these for the reinforced windshields I believe and the 47s don't. I remember it being a big thing in some of the reviews.

 

I do not believe it was just this that lead to a retool.

There are some differences in the chassis

The 21 pin version was reworked to cater for Sound decoders - it also added cab lighting.

 

you will find cab lights and a dedicated speaker space absent on the chassis for the earlier 47s

 

Otherwise, the bodyshells are fundamentally the same - barring the minor change to add cab lights on the inside of the roof, which, if i remember, is more a change to the cab bulkhead than the bodyshell istelf.

I thought there were, I was looking at two of them on ebay.   They were in the old style dark blue packaging too.

The early class 57s were 8-pin DCC, perhaps there are some chassis out there with class 47 bodies fitted?

Earlier 57s were 8-pin, but all of the 47s, to the best of my knowledge, were 21-pin. I, too, have one from the very first batch and it is 21-pin.

I believe the first 47 introduced by Bachmann was circa 2007 and was 21 pin

The earlier Virgin Thunderbirds in 57 guise were definitely 8 pin.

I have an early D1764 class 47 and it's one of the ones where the body/chassis rocks on the bogies, the 15 or so newer style boxes I have are all locos which don't rock around and in my opinion are better, my D1764 always looks like it is leaning to one side

Relatively easy fix - remove bogies and trim the pivot where the screw locates the bogie to the chassis so that it is straight rather than tapered. This makes the chassis rest on the bogie collars so that they can move front to back (necessary to negotiate undulations) but not sideways. This means the chassis sits slightly lower on the bogies - you may want to add a shim to adjust (I will when I next have the bogies out on mine but its not ridiculously too low without the shims).

I have an early Bachmann class 47.. 32-802 BR blue with domino the head code and it has a 21 pin socket. I don't recall any Bachmann class 47's that were 8 pin.. Maybe I'm wrong!
