Popped along this morning and had a very enjoyable 3 hours.

Really nice show with lots of quality layouts in various different scales - Good to see a few RMWebbers and Lightermans Yard again with the 2mmFS crowd. The new 2mmFS layout by E&E MRC looks to be an interesting project.

My personal favourites were the blue diesels (;)) represented by Dubmill Sidings and Hebble Vale Goods, both of which I had not seen before - had a nice chat with Karl re HVG too.

Here's a few photos I took of the stuff that floated my boat - will be back next year - thanks to all the organisers :good:

As usual this was an excellent show with some very nice layouts. The one that stood out for me was Lighterman's Yard which was beautifully modelled and packed with minute details. I also liked Uden, a Dutch HO layout with about 15 moving objects (including people and animals) and End of the Line.

A huge car park and reasonably priced food are a bonus.

Many thanks to the Epsom & Ewell club for an enjoyable day.

As usual an excellent and friendly show. The standard of Lighterman's Yard is truly inspiring especially at 2mm

Some of my photos from yesterday where I concentrated on the little details.

It is usual for me to enjoy my visit to this show and this year was no exception.  The organisers made the best of the reconfigured venue: I forget what type of clinic now occupies the bit no longer available.  I welcomed the opening of the side gate which cut a few yards and minutes off the trudge from Ewell East station.  Between them the traders supplied everything on my admittedly modest shopping list - a stand for a soldering iron. a bottle of chemical blackener and a cow, since you ask - and a couple of books.  The catering was OK.  I had fish fingers, chips and beans for lunch.  So what if it was intended for kids?  So is Shaun the Sheep.

To the layouts then, and i shall comment on but a selection.  Woodstowe [OO] caught my eye.  It is a very tidy ex-GW branch terminus, operated using the sparse timetable that Cardigan enjoyed prior to closure.  Before the advent of Beeching there were termini like this which were neat rather than shaggy and could have been operated with even less stock if only there had been more understanding of costs and takings.  Where's the fun in that?   I liked the detailing which the builder had applied to his coaches.   Suspended gangways have that name for a reason and the necessary brackets were where they should have been.  It's worth doing.

How could one not be captivated by Uden [HO]?  It is Dutch outline with lots of things that work - road vehicles doing three point turns, people manhandling milk churns, cranking the lifting barriers and climbing ladders and my favourite, the cloud of steam coming from the open bonnet of a car.  It is easy to get sniffy about features like that but they require skill and ingenuity to make and I wish I was that clever.

Brighton East [EM] by our very own Kipford attracted the crowds, as it does tend to do.  I liked the fire escapes and scaffolding on the buildings behind the station - well observed, commonly featured but seldom modelled.  The appearance of a nuclear flask train may or may nor have been a gentle dig at an ecologically aware political party which counts Brighton as one of its strongholds.  By and large the sound-equipped diesels were as convincing as I have heard, save for the Thumper which ideally would have deafened us all.

Finally, I met Lighterman's Yard [2mmFS] for the first time.  It really captures bygone South-East London.  As is common there, the railway soars above the townscape which is very well represented with plenty of pubs, a horse-drawn brewer's day and much else which evokes the late 50s/early 60s so well and with just a touch of wow factor.

Thanks to the Epsom and Ewell club for a very enjoyable two days where all the layouts were of a good standard. I also thought Lightermans Yard to be a lovely layout and was my layout of the show. I have got tentative agreement for them to come to the SHMRC show at some point. Uden I think in some peoples mind is possibly a marmite layout, I loved it. The standard of modeling and the skill in making the automatons was of the highest order, operationally it would grate on some people but that is not the point of it. It was great to see the End Of The Line again, so simple but absorbing to watch it.

Thanks for the kind comments. I totally agree with you about the Thumper, it was running with the sound turned right up whilst everything else was about 50%. Although it comes DCC and Sound ready, there is a fundamental problem with the design in getting the sound out of the body. Charlie Petty has been looking at ways of improving the sound for some time, but has not yet found an optimum solution. I spent a long time talking to him yesterday about potential solutions, all of them involve some form of surgery and the loss of some of the interior. This is the next project to be tackled on Brighton and I plan to have a solution in place for the next outing at Southwold in August.

I totally agree with Dave it was an enjoyable and excellent show I certainly felt that Fisherton Sarum was surrounded by some very high quality layouts. If you have not been before keep an eye open for the date next year, as well as a great selection of layouts it is supported by a good range of trade. Well recommended.

We had a fun weekend, despite a few electrical and a mechanical issue with the turntable, and think we kept things moving and the visitors entertained. Thanks to all whom came by and said hello.
