Zero1 was a quintessential British system, not sold outside the UK, IIRC.

Well ok, but your original quote to which i replied was a definate suggestion that 35 years ago, dcc hadn't been invented. Not quite the same as 'British system, not available outside the UK'.

Ah, but in that case, my statement still stands Andy: DCC was invented by Dr Lenz in the mid/late-80's, several years after I started in this hobby as a youngster (1980) Zero1 isn't exactly DCC isn't it? ;)  But if you redefine "DCC" as "multiple train control on the same circuit" the old analogue Trix EMS is even older (1960's IIRC, at least well before Hornby came up with their system).

Or ZIMO's Multi train control of 1979?

Strictly speaking, it is.

When we talk about DCC, we usually mean systems which comply to NMRA standards, but we omit the NMRA bit. Zero 1 (& Airfix's MTC) were made before these standards were defined, so they don't conform.

Although they are DCC, they are not NMRA compliant DCC.

Airfix's MTC was an analogue command control system, not digital.

Betamax was regarded as a very good system, in its day.

Zero 1, MTC and a whole bunch of other similar systems weren't.
