Reviving an old roller

Recommended Posts

OK, so I received a DX of unknown build last summer.  (well, it followed me home out here last summer), and I was told that it had spark, but that it hadn't run for it's previous owner.  I've spent a couple hours playing with it today, and managed to get it to run on its own, just.

Before I get too far into flogging it, I have a couple questions for anyone who might have answers:

1.  How full should the crankcase be of oil ?  I know there is some in there (I dipped it &  there is enough that the timing gears are picking up oil & a small quantity is coming out along the valve shaft), is that about the right working level?

2.  The carb- which seems a very well thought out design- any hints as to "best" settings?  Or is it all basically by guess for setting?

3.  Fuel- I'm currently using white gas (Naptha), as I know other ME's used to use it.  Is there anything better ?  I can get 94 RON gasoline easy enough, & probably most other liquid fuels fairly easily.  However, I understand that white gas is a common fuel because it tends to be fairly clean of a fuel.

These may seem daft questions, but I'm far more used to big diesels or steam engines...not these little infernal combustion jobbies.  It's just that when I was offered this, I know that rollers are different to begin with, and gas ones even more so...

James
