RMweb Gold Scottish Modeller Posted April 7, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2017 Hi all, A recent upload to the Toptic collection includes this photo:- http://topticl.zenfolio.com/p175454229/h8718c17f#h872bd595 The caption just says 'Class 50 Waverley July '69' and that's all. So - is this actually on the Waverley Route? I ask as I don't recognise the location. Thanks
AJCT
Hi all, A recent upload to the Toptic collection includes this photo:- http://topticl.zenfolio.com/p175454229/h8718c17f#h872bd595 The caption just says 'Class 50 Waverley July '69' and that's all. So - is this actually on the Waverley Route? I ask as I don't recognise the location. Thanks Unfortunately not, and unlikely anyway if the July '69 date is correct. It looks like Slateford, looking towards Carstairs, with the pointwork for the double junction (as it was then) to the Craiglockhart Connection just in front of the loco. DOCJACOB
100% agree not Waverley Route if date correct. Slateford gets my vote too
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted April 7, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2017 There's another view of Slateford a little further along. http://topticl.zenfolio.com/p175454229/h872BD595#h872bd46f
RMweb Gold Scottish Modeller Posted April 7, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 7, 2017 Hi all, That's that sorted then! Slaateford never even entered my mind. All I can say is that I was distracted by the caption! Thanks
'CHARD
Hi all, That's that sorted then! Slaateford never even entered my mind. All I can say is that I was distracted by the caption! Thanks I spent a few minutes studying that very photo too! I knew it wasn't on the WR, but I hadn't got so far as identifying Slateford.
millerhillboy
Not quite the excitement of a hoover on the waverley but I'll tell you what there are some great edinburgh area pictures on that website
royaloak
Quite a few are captioned wrong, 24s beings called 25s, 126s being called 120s etc, but that doesnt detract from some rather fine pictures of a bygone age. This one- http://topticl.zenfolio.com/p175454229/h872BD46F#h872bd45b I find very interesting in that the second carriage seems to be a DMBS just like the lead carriage. Edit- Some nice Birmingham ones as well.

Agree about the captioning, but some great pics as you say. Although getting a bit off-topic here, IIRC from personal observation the formation for the E&G Swindon sets was latterly as shown, ie with an "intermediate" MBS or MSL (to borrow the terminology from my contemporary Ian Allan abc booklet) as the second and fifth vehicles, with the trailer first and trailer buffet first in the centre of the 6-car set. AFAIK the D (Driving) prefix only featured in the Ian Allan booklet for Driving Trailers, all DMU motor vehicles being assumed to be driving unless otherwise stated, and only seems to have appeared more widely with 2nd-generation DMUs... but maybe the DMU experts on here can confirm this or even refer to a more appropriate thread ? Bill Jamieson
The reporting number is consistent with it being 1969 and post-closure of the Waverley Route. 6S85 was the 16:43 Carlisle New Yard to Millerhill fully-fitted freight and only applied from 1969, probably from the timetable change in May (can anyone confirm the date?). Prior to that it would have been a class 4 working. The winter 1969-70 WTT shows it as being booked for a class 50. Bill
