Fitting lights to 21 pin class 20's

Hi,

I have almost finished fitting lights to 2 class 20's, both are 8 pin or were !  I hardwired both of with sound chips a will back so installing the Express lighting kits was relatively easy as all I needed to do was to solder each wire pair.

However I am about to start on my other pair of 20's and they are both 21 pin sound fitted so am not keen on solder to the chip itself.  Has anyone done one of these and how did you complete it.

regards

Doug

I fitted lights to a 21-pin sound-fitted 20. Like you, I wasn't keen on the idea of soldering to the decoder itself, nor anywhere near it. I worked out the pin-outs, and soldered to the bases of the pins on the PCB, with the decoder removed from the loco while I did this. Unfortunately, I didn't take any photos of this. What I do remember is that the space available for soldering on one side of the double row of pins was very tight. It did work though.

Thanks for posting that pic, Paul. That's exactly what I did with mine. It also illustrates what I said about the clearance for the soldering iron being tight at the top of the photo.

Hi Guys,

Well that's one down and one to go. I must say the 8 pin version was a lot easier you are so right about the soldering it was a real fiddle. Took me longer to sort that than the actual fitting of the lights. The Express models kit I used had wires that were a little too short so I had to extend from the chip end so I could put the board over the motor.

I will tackle the other one later next week.
