I'm winging my way across The Pond tonight towards York via Dublin, Manchester and perhaps other points yet unknown! Thomas from Rapido will be joining me there and we'll be displaying at the York Model Railway Show next weekend.

Our booth will be on the second level mezzanine overlooking the lovely York race track. Come on up and enjoy the view with us, and see the first sample of the NEW UK PRODUCT that we'll be announcing there! Hope to see many of you there!

Cue the wish-listing suggestions of things many people would want, but most of them are;

A - Not a model Rapido believe would be a good one for them

B - Not a model that is dynamic enough to entice purchases from a large number of modellers / collectors

C - A suggestion that is too niche and specific that it rules out further adaptions of the model to allow similar class mates and thus not viable

D - A model that is something they would want, rather than something which is a development of trends and interests that the sector has shown exists in polls and other similar purchases.

E - All of the above...

It's going to be a 320 EMU. How do I know? Because I've just built a kit one...

(and more rationally isn't this a model that Revolution are proposing for N with Rapido as manufacturer? Share research costs... And were the 320s not made at York?)

Edit... Reading again, interesting choice of word "product"... Might suggest not a train?

Great to see you but I wish it was news of an HST prototype!

It was Locomotion Models decision to put the HST Prototype on hold. Due to the current financial climate. Not something Rapido had control over.

A nice model the dynamometer car will be, but for a single unpowered vehicle, the price has, sadly, put me off from even contemplating it. Sorry.

So how much would you pay for it, then?

Hi, Budgie. I was thinking about £85.00, bearing in mind the cost of a new Thompson from Bachmann. I think that is a reasonable amount for an unpowered vehicle. I will be kit-building the car. It will cost the price of the kit. The rest I already have, i.e. time, paint, transfers etc..

So the cost in time, paint, transfers etc is not being counted then? Regardless of whether you already have it or not. The Thompson coaches have several different variations, sharing the underframe, bogies, ends and no doubt a few other parts. The dynamometer car is a one off vehicle, with one livery, team finish, full interior detailing and lighting.

The market for 'Thompsons' is also considerable larger. People may buy multiples of the same diagram for renumbering. Can't see that happening here. Basic economics suggests the dyno car will be more expensive for that reason alone. Even before you consider a less price sensitive collector market. How many garter blue mallards lurk up and down the country whose owners will want a dyno car? A fair few I'd bet. Like it or not, they'll pay and that demand drives the price up. Worth noting that the only other rtr dyno car is via Goldenage who are not noted for being inexpensive.

Hilux is right - even things yoI've brought you've not included in your price comparison. Will you take less than 3 hours to build the kit?

The price is the price, you either like it or you don't and the supplier can charge whatever they like (although just as a supplier is free to set their price so a consumer is free to decide it is too high) and the alternatives would be more expensive. If you can find a Golden Age one it is very nice but will be a lot more than this, on the other hand I find brass models still have a finish that no plastic RTR can match. What I do dislike is charging a 40% deposit upfront.
