layouts for OAP homes, fetes and charity days

Selkent MRC based in London two months ago changed its remit from a club building and running model railways which wasn't attracting many new members with a paid membership to  a club now with free membership, but with members not bringing layouts they are working on to club nights but instead taking their layouts out to the community and those without layouts helping run them.

So far,   we have taken layouts (the club actually has 6 members layouts at present and able to transport three of them at short notice in its own kitted out van) to two OAP homes, been invited to a large community day event in Lewisham and spent a nice morning at a local primary school.

If you have a easy to transport layout and have time often during midweek, (weekends of course would be just as great) and able to give some of your time to show your layout at places away from model railway shows (btw we also do show our layouts at shows and run a few ourselves)  please come and join us.    The monthly club nights are more about social and drinking and held in New Cross at a venue solely for us.

The club has got some funds from our recent show which can be used to get some new volunteers DPs checked to take their layouts into schools and community centres and the club is now actively marketing the concept of model railways as a hobby to those outside of the community.   We also in talks about getting a free stand at a major federation conference which represents over 150,000 staff as part of a display on hobbies for retirement and hopefully roping in the 00 gauge Ass to come with us.

We have  open days over easter weekend (Sat & Sun) if you fancy coming along and having a chat in New Cross

We were contacted by a local nursing home to see if someone could go and talk to the residents - we had two volunteers who went on separate occasions, one to talk about the history of model railways with his Hornby tinplate, Trix, Lone-Star etc collection and the other a slide show of steam in the 1960s and early preservation. These have since been repeated each year. Also after one of our members suffered a stroke and moved to a nursing home, the Club built a layout which other residents operate with him.
