Essar buys from Ebay

A selection of tenders and loco bodies from Ebay, two 060 LMS tank locos bodies, an LMS tender with frames and insulated axles for two rail, and two unused LMS tender bodies.

All date from production at Herne Bay, in the 1940's and early 1950's, although most castings were made pre war and stored away for later sale. Repeat runs were done by Hamblings in the 1950's.

The bodies are solid lead castings, very heavy indeed. The locos took the standard Essar Mechanisms with 2 rail wheels or outside third pickup. Stewart Reidpath disliked 3 rail, and only did the outside third at Mr Arthur Hamblings request. The wheels were coined brass, fully spoked and good quality.

The tender take two side casings units that screw into place at the ends. The tenders are very solid indeed. This example has Romford diecast wheels on Peco insulated axles, to allow 2 rail running. The axles are coated with an insulated layer of hard resin.

The diecast  locos and tenders were sold as LMS, but they were finished for all the railway company names. Only the brass locos were accurate to scale.

The 060 started life as an HO model, the brass moulds were later altered to widen it a bit to suit 00 uses, as interest fell in HO after the war period.
