Welcome to the part of RMweb that Andy York has kindly made available for entries to and discussion of the creating a Cameo layout competition announced in MRJ issue 254.

Timing

Please note that the competition timing has been extended to allow more time for entrants. The final display of winning and shortlisted entries will now take place at "Railex" in Aylesbury in May of 2019 rather than 2018 as originally announced.

Entering the competition

All competition entries need to be registered using the form provided and all entries need to be received on or before Saturday 23rd September 2017. Completed entries may be emailed or sent by post, email to cameocomp@wildswanbooks.co.uk or post to WSB Cameo Competition, 3a Upper Lambridge Street, Larkhall, Bath, BA1 6RY.

Rules

Each entrant needs to have purchased a copy of Iain Rice's "Creating Cameo Layouts" published by Wild Swan Books, which describes in detail what a "Cameo Layout" is in the context of this competition, in addition to providing ideas and source material for would be Cameo builders.

Judging

The competition will be judged by Iain Rice, Gordon Gravett and Chris Nevard, initially using material submitted by entrants by means of written or electronic media, including threads on this forum. It is hoped to include actual viewing of entries by one or more judges for as many entries as possible, particularly after initial shortlisting. Entries need, for all practical purposes, to be completed before and in time for potential exhibition in May 2019 at Railex in Aylesbury.

I had not been anticipating the need to show work in progress - that could be very embarrassing.  But I guess I can understand the reason for it.

 

I was planning to leave my decision to enter until I had the project finished and was satisfied that it was good enough. The chances of it being good enough would be very low so there is probably nothing lost.

 

I guess I could try and finish it before 23 September!

As well as the finished layout, I feel the competition encourages the showing of the building of the layout.

 

If you saw Pempoul or Catcott Burtle at an exhibition, due to their excellence you might be forgiven for thinking you could never achieve such high quality.

But seeing how such layouts are made, as they grow, might encourage you to have a go yourself.

 

We all approach things differently, we all make mistakes, so seeing how to do ( or not to do) something is just as valuable to me as seeing the completed model.

Inviting members of an open forum to join this competition, then stating they have to have purchased a book is not opening it out to a wider group of modellers but keeping it within a a certain following. All you will end up with is a group of Iain Rice copycat layouts. I am sure there is a greater source of imagination if you were to do a simple set of rules and not demand the purchase of a certain publication.

My thinking is that it would make a great 'first step' for newbie club members to move to a more serious layout style than perhaps they're used to.

Wrong way round Clive. The competition stems from the book, it's only here because Andy/Warners kindly allowed Simon to have a section so that any entrants so inclined could post their work here. If a Rice style Cameo is not for you then ignore it.

 

 

As I've said elsewhere this morning, if Simon and Iain sell a few more books then I'm delighted for them. They've both served our hobby well over the years and deserve it.

Got to agree with Arthur on that one, although I don't know how the rule about buying or owning a copy of the book will be enforced.

 

If you want to join the illicit 'South Devon Cameo Layout ring', Clive, I can lend you my copy of the book for a small fee (say, half a pound of good sausages), and I'll get it couriered over to you in an unmarked white Zepplin when the Wild Swan auditor is expected.

The only reason it is mentioned in this Forum is because Andy Y kindly agreed that the Forum could be used for the competition. The requirement to buy the book pre-dated the offical appearance of the Competition in this Forum.

 

And I bought the book long before I heard about a competition.

 

Your complaint might be valid if the book was being published by BRM

I think I can help on this one. I believe that policing this requirement has been outsourced to a European company Wildvogel and it's head of security Herr Schirz.

The full rules appear to have been written on the back of the painting of "The fallen bookshop owner with the big boobies", concealed within a knackwurst of course.

So what if it is? In the cost of building a layout an extra £25 on a book which will help with ideas, solutions, etc (as well as help those struggling with what the concept is...) is pretty minimal.

 

It helps us get out of our armchairs and do some modelling, it gives a realistic aim for completion (& thus helps us not retreat to our armchair at the first excuse), & it sells a few extra books to those of us who may not have otherwise have done so.

 

Win win surely? Those who dont see it as a win don't have to take part, read the threads, or comment theirin...

 

Happy modelling. Now at least I havent mislaid the kettle...

We're not talking the Mega Global Corp. here, just a small bookshop, a specialist publisher and author.

I think it's a more than a little churlish to complain that a competition set up by, administered by and presumably paid for by the author and publisher of a book requires you to buy a copy of the book to enter. It's like complaining that the 18.83 Challenge was discriminatory to non-P4 Modellers. Yes it was, that was the whole point.

I'd have said it was more deckchair weather today, certainly in the not quite so far south west... spotty hankerchiefs and everything.

 

The point that one starts off in their armchair anyway, from whence they grab the book. It then inspires them to rise from said chair, and model :-)
