RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted July 25, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 25, 2017 (edited) Looks like a wing-nut to me ...R Well, as we are being pedantic, I agree it's a wing nut. Spot on. However the wing nut threads onto a bolt, the head of which is let into the end of the baseboard. Therefore I would venture that the fiddle yard does in fact 'bolt on' to the rest of the layout.... Unless of course we are saying the fiddle yard 'nuts' onto the layout. Call me old fashioned but that sounds wrong. How is the fiddle yard secured on your entry, Robin? Rob. Robin2
How is the fiddle yard secured on your entry, Robin? Sorry. My attempt at humour failed miserably. I was trying to make a play on the words "attached thumbnails" on the basis that the picture showed a wingnut rather than a thumbnail. ...R

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted August 2, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 2, 2017 Evening all. Work continues on the infrastructure rather than actual modelling. Additional supports have been fashioned for the fiddle yards. Code named F.A.R.T.W.A.F.T.E.D, ( Fiddle Area Retention Tackle , Wooden Apparatus,FabricaTED )they dangle off the main layout supports.... I have also been playing with Foam board..... davefromacrossthepond
Rob, Love the stands. I've looked all over the web for similar ones in the U.S. with no luck. Is there a "brand name" on them? I've seen some on aliexpress, but that's about it. Love the way you are supporting the ends on that. Dave
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted August 2, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 2, 2017 Thanks, Dave. I'm not sure where you would find these in the States. These came from B&Q but other firms such as Screwfix do them. A search under 'scaffolding tresles'will find them on U.K sites. Rob.

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted August 11, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) This week has seen some more work done and I now have a platform for Mutton. The platform uses PECO concrete sides with plasticard top, suitably braced. I painted a few spare sections trying to come up with a suitable concrete like finish. The final finish followed these steps. Intial finish/texture built up using light dusting of Humbrol acrylic spray paint. Light grey, sea grey and dark earth. The I used weathering powders starting with shading applied to the over hang and up rights using 'smoke'. I added 'sand' and 'dark earth' before blending and high lighting using 'white' until it looked right to me. The following photos have already appeared on the main 'Sheep Chronicles' thread...I attach a couple of prototype photos which hopefully alliw glimpses of the real thing Rob. RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted August 11, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 11, 2017 Would the panels near where the locos stand and eject hot steam be a different colour ?
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted August 11, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 11, 2017 (edited) Would the panels near where the locos stand and eject hot steam be a different colour ?Can't be 100% but I think not, Stubbers. This view, albeit from a tricky angle to be totally sure, certainly suggests not really.. The colours varied so much though( even allowing for variations in film and developing at the time) .There is considerable room for manouvere. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted September 15, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 15, 2017 Muttons Mollusc like progress continues so therefore not much to report at present. I am now weathering the track bit by bit prior to ballasting. The platform is done and will be properly placed once said trackwork is done. I really am finding this bit rather tedious but once it is completed I do hope to move a bit quicker.........ish..... A few images then.... RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted September 16, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 16, 2017 Very subtle, very convincing. Thank you. I use the same colours to weather everything, be it locos, stock, track or structures. In doing so I hope it provides a uniform look to the layout and hopefully nothing jars. Rob. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted September 17, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 17, 2017 Morning all. Early start this morning thanks to a very loud cat......Having let the offending article out, I decided to carry on with some weathering of the track. As an aside, I took this rather cruel close up. RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted September 17, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 17, 2017 Unlikely motive power appeared on Mutton today in the form of Sheep Lane regular, ex-Midland 3F, 43474. Quite how this loco strayed so far from the S&DJR is anyones guess....... A bit of fun ensued following a strenuous day of track weathering. Apologies for the lack of backscene but I do think these images give an impression of the finished article. Rob.

RMweb Gold Stubby47 Posted October 19, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 19, 2017 I like the way the ground looks patchy and unevenly coloured ( photo 1 above, in front of the open wagon) - do you have a 'method' for this, or is it just a random application of colours?
