Anniversaries, from 50 years since the ‘Big Four’ to 20 years of Virgin Trains, are marked in the June 2017 Model Rail.

News. The new models reviewed include Hornby’s ‘Merchant Navy 4-6-2, Bachmann’s LNWR ‘Coal Tank’ 0-6-2T, the Graham Farish ‘Castle’ in ‘N’ gauge, and the ‘O’ gauge Heljan Class 37 and Dapol GWR coaches.

Workbench: George Dent marks 30 years since Railfreight with a trio of Brush Type 4s and he creates two red DB Schenker locomotives, one of which is in a special commemorative scheme.

Peter Marriott builds a ‘OO9’ scene centred on a Bachmann L&B station.

Paul Bambrick shows how to make a backscene seem much bigger than it really is by using forced perspective.

Features: Ben Ando provides a potted history of the Virgin Trains fleet.

Paul Lunn presents three classic layouts marking the end of Southern steam in 1967.

Brian Rolley needed a backscene that would stand close scrutiny and a flat image wouldn’t be good enough.

A guide to the ‘Big Four’s post-war liveries as they tried to restore pre-war glamour.

Layouts: Cheriton Bishop – East Bedfordshire MRS ‘OO’ gauge layout.

Sheepcroft, an ‘EM’ gauge layout that started with a visit to a skip.

Regulars: Exhibition Diary and Backscene, in which Chris Leigh recalls a modelling tip from a man who built a working flea circus!

I have spent the last hour and a half looking through the magazine and it is another good issue. Sadly upon trying to download the FREE extra pages I find I have to sign up to an account with "Yumpu", a name I have never heard of and having signed up it then tells me there are no pages of the magazine available to download and print. Means I have just wasted thirty minutes on the computer when I could have been reading the magazine. So I solved the problem by sending an email asking for the pages to be posted.

Model Rail is the only magazine for which have a digital subscription so is it the case for other titles that the digital version always comes out 4 or 5 days after the paper copies?

I've never worked in print but in this digital age I cannot understand why this should be so unless a printed copy is needed to scan up to a digital version.

I don't know whether I am just being "lucky" here with the app.

I do know that I find it immensely frustrating.

What are other digital subscribers experiences?

The digital version is available ON publication date. The subscription copies sometimes arrive BEFORE publication date due to the vagaries of the postal service. Publication date for this issue is May 4. The digital issue is uploaded from the same files as the print version. It is not scanned from a printed copy. It is, however, easier to control when the digital version is received than it is to control when printed copies arrive, hence the discrepancy. I'm sorry you find it frustrating but you're actually not losing out in any way. (CJL)

Thanks Chris for the explanation, it makes sense and Steamport for your reply.

Like Steamport I pay in advance for a subscription, though mine is digital, but I don't even get the perk of reading the magazine in advance of Joe Public in my local newsagent where Model Rail is also usually on sale before the digital version is available.

Perhaps a digital subscription is not for me then.

Aren't the benefits of subscription the guarantee of a copy of each issue, the convenience of having it delivered (by post or electronically) and the reduction in the yearly cost ?

Really enjoyed this months magazine, enjoyed the virgin trains article, sectorisation article and I am amazed at how good the Hornby class 66 looked alongside the Bachy model with a bit of effort.

Keep up the good work

Agreed.

For me, and I guess many, it's more important that it turns up regularly than the exact day of receipt. Being able to read it a day or two before anyone who has to slope off to the newsagents to buy a copy risking it being OOS or not yet on the shelves, is not a high priority.

The benefit is less overseeing from SWMBO or comments starting "too many magazines ...".

I've never seen an out of stock though.

Looks good! Can I get the download issue as a one off or do I need to subscribe?

You can get the app and download one off issues. You don't have to subscribe, but subscribing is cheaper per issue, as per the printed subscription is too.

I've never understood why getting a magazine a few days ahead of anyone else is seen as a perk, what's the mad rush? I live in Africa where we are lucky to get any post at all! Magazines used to go missing and get mangled regularly which is why I switched to a digital subscription.

This issue looks very good.

Moan alert - went to download the Virgin articles, had to provide email address etc to login into MR's website (fair enough), then had to create an account for Yumpu or login using Google+ etc.

Tried using Google+, get logged into Google then Yumpu demands

Yumpu.com would like to
  •
Know your age range and language
  •
    View your email addresses
  •
    Manage your contacts

By clicking Allow, you allow this app and Google to use your information in accordance with their respective terms of service and privacy policies. You can change this and other Account Permissions at any time.

Errr, no thanks. Not giving any of my details to some dodgy website. Clicked Deny and got an error message. So to "CLAIM YOUR FREE GIFT" I have to give all my personal details to some website I know nothing about - seriously? Not impressed and grumpy. Does MR not understand cyber security?

Grump over. Rest of mag is great BTW. Much prefer "35 ways to improve your fleet" to last month's cover.

It's an unfortunate fact that many apps and websites get access to your contacts (email addresses) when you join/download them as detailed in their T&Cs (which many do not read). I even found that to be a case with accessing photos in a Dropbox (that someone had sent me the contact address for their pics) which wanted you to 'join' just to see them. I declined.

The advise is to carefully check and read before clicking 'accept' or 'allow' (as you seem to have done).

The arrangements for viewing the extra pages are made through Bauer's marketing and IT departments. The Model Rail editorial team - who are the only people on MR who look at RMweb - merely provides the pages. (CJL)

I believe that Yumpu are a pretty respected organisation in "Nerd" circles. I've seen them mentioned a few times on BBC and Sky News tech programmes.

Is it all previous content from past issues or is there new material? Asking because if it's old material then I would already have it.

It's everything we've ever done about Virgin Trains, so more help to newer readers than to those who have every issue. I'm sure Yumpu is a reputable organization. Bauer would not use 'some dodgy website'. (CJL)
