Bought the RM today, nice value with the 8oo issues supplement and directory of railway attractions. I once had bound volumes of RM from late 50's-early '60's, then we had RM in the school library in the 70's  so some of the covers, adverts, and  photo material looked familiar from that point. But the main mag shows that if there ever was a 'golden age'  of railway modelling, it is right now. And if you think its expensive, try dental implants, railway modelling is a bargain by comparison.

Recommended purchase.

yep, we've never had it so good!

the RM anniversary booklet provides an interesting cross-section across the decades, the samples of layouts shown from the 1960s, '70s and '80s reveal some impressive LMS/MR modelling - was Big Four modelling more popular back then because of the demographic of modellers then who could recall the LMS/LNER/SR/GWR from the days of their youth?

excellent main mag too, loads to read and a good range of scales, periods etc for the layouts/modelling featured.

all the best,

Keith

And even Neely made it into the 800th edition on the letters page. A colleague said, rather unkindly I thought, that they must have been short of letters as they even included a photograph!!

Personally, I thought that Neely was an absolutely superb model railway and Ely is a station that I pass though on a daily basis and, sometimes, alight at when I need to renew my season ticket. My only question about this layout is... have you managed to model the overflow pipe, shaped like an eel's head, by the ladies waiting room?

Joking aside, I actually showed it to my brother, who was over from Australia, to demonstrate just how sophisticated model railways had become since we were lads (50 years ago)!

A very enjoyable issue but I do wish magazines would have accurate track diagrams.

Poldeen is shown with a diamond crossing which makes the layout unworkable but the photos show two back to back points which make it an excellent plan.

Congratulations to the Railway Modeller on reaching 800 editions. That is a long slog with continued commitment from the editorial team and owners. None of the other magazines can match its longevity and having seen off Model Railways and Model Railway Constructor (which arguably were technically superior) seems to suggest that RM has managed to get it about right.

I bought my first copy back in May 1976 and have bought every month since. There were times when I thought why but I think at the moment it is going through a "purple patch" but perhaps this actually reflects the state of the railway modelling.

So tomorrow I am off  to John Dutfields in Chelmsford to buy RM800.

Hello, Poldeen is my layout, and there is a thread on RMWeb showing the development from scratch, including an Anyrail track plan. (There is a link in my signature below)

You are right. The points concerned are nose-to-nose code 55 short radius points, not a double slip.

Cheers

A very good layout. If they had shown a double slip at least it would have been possible to run the layout but with a plain diamond it makes the whole thing a nonsense! I must follow your link and find out more.

nice mixture as usual, and a magazine I would go back to in a few years time. Also proves that there are still people prepared to do loco drawings.

I am hoping I will still be around for issue 1000!

I just need to get the missing years , from 10 years ago. Just got to work out when I actually stopped. Buying a full set at Bradford Exhibition, made me realise just how heavy they are! Just wish the digital editions when back further. I find it easier to find what I want, as I still prefer the printed version for actual reading.

I've not missed many issues since 1969 and I have to say it's far better now than in was perhaps 10 years ago, I too hope to see the 1000th edition. Wonder what the circulation is?

This months is a really excellent issue and Sidmouth is amazing.

While the J35 drawing is nice, it looks like the cab spectacle plate is too small, it is the only error and one that if building is correctable. Does anyone have a drawing of a J35 cab spectacle to compare with?

In 2012 circulation of RM was 43,328 average per issue according to Abc stats, the 800th anniversary special supplement mentions a figure of over ninety thousand circulation in 1979.

I too think RM is in good order, I buy it every month without fail.

Cheers,

Thanks for that Keith,

43,000 is quite an impressive circulation didn't realise there were that many modellers.

I was surprised to see that John Brewer had edited even more issues than CJF.

Taking together his time at RM and MRN, John was almost certainly the longest-serving model railway magazine editor of all time. There are a few thoughts on this on his obituary thread.
