BEMO Tm 2/2 running problems

This always seems to have pick up problems - the wheels get dirty very quickly and even with an ESU lokpilot micro in it running isn't much better. I was hoping the higher DCC voltage might get through the crud... Anyone found a way around this?

I had one with that exact symptoms. Replaced the wheel sets with newer ones (shiny instead of dull-ish, different metal alloy) and it improved running no end. But. it's still a 2-axle loco so its wheelbase is small by default. You could circumvent it by permanently coupling it up to a 4-axle wagon (Haik-v for instance) which has additional pick-ups hidden in its bogies.

Thanks for the tip about the wheel sets - I'll get some replacements from BEMO. I also thought about the extra wagon approach - might put that on my "things to do" list !

Just in case someone gets confused: as delivered, Bemo does NOT supply additional pick-ups to any of their freight wagons as standard! Should you wish to go this route, you'd need to install these yourself! :toclue:

You may be able to use the wipers from the coach-lighting sets, but I never tried that. The other option is to glue a small piece of PCB underneath the bogie (for 4-axle cars) and solder the wipers to that (one for each wheel to increase the chances of contact) but that construction can be visible at close range.

Hi DM! I have the parts for installing wipers - I have added extra pick ups to the tenders of a couple of sound-equipped 00 locos. If I ever get around to creating a pick-up wagon I'll post pictures (but don't hold your breath..) :)

Well the secret seems to be to remove the wheels and polish the ******* out of the treads and the backs. Then a drop of electrolube on the pickups and the wheel treads and that seems to have solved it! I had it pulling 4 BEX coaches around with no problems except at the point frogs at low speed. Counter-intuitive to put oil on the treads but no problem with slippage.

Hi

Found this chain of posts really interesting. I also run a 009 layout where most locos are 4 wheelers. I was recommended to clean the track and wheels regularly with a cloth soaked in cigarette petrol lighter fluid. The brand I use is "Perma Fluid". Not all brands are the same though. My friend buys it for me from a little specialist tobacconist shop near Ispwich.

For regularly used track I start by rubbing with the rough side of a piece of hardboard (Homasote brand in US) and then polish the rail head with a piece of cloth soaked in the lighter fluid. Repeat the fluid rub until no more black comes off the rail. Some people use track rubbers ( a sort of gritty eraser) but I find these just redistribute the dirt!

I clean the loco wheels with cotton buds soaked in the lighter fluid. Don't go mad though - I used too much on a Minitrains 009 loco and it wouldn't work until the fluid had evaporated from inside the mechanism! It is probably worth cleaning wagon and carriage wheels occasionally too as these can pick up and distribute dirt - I have found that where wheels have been chemically blackened, the blackening wears off as they run and deposits on the rail head, prompting more pick up issues and need for cleaning.

Regards,

John.
